Defrag Problem

I am having problems defragging my C drive. It gets to 2% to scan the disk for errors and then starts over. Any ideas? Is there a freebee program that will defrag?

 

what OS do u have? if its not XP then thats your problem, all other OS's are EXTREMELY sensitive to any changes on the HDD when your defraging it, so try defragging in safe mode, or press ctrl+alt+del and close all unneeded processes and then will usually do it, or what i used to do (because none of that worked) just close everything u can, start defragging and it should defrag after a while, took mine like 10 hours, but i was sleeeping so didn't matter, other than that im not sure, i think windows 2000 has a utility that lets u defrag on start up which works great

 

yeah you are using something other than xp it is very sensitive. It does work in safe mode though.

 

Do you have an active screen saver? If so, deactivate it. The only things that should be running when you press control+alt+delete are system tray and explorer. Defrag cannot have anything writing to the drive while working or it will continuously start over. There is a handy little utility program called "EndItAll" that is very helpful, but I lost the link. I'm sure that you could get a link on Google. the program is free.

 

Try disabling your anti-virus software. Also disable any anti spyware , adware or monitoring software while running the de-frag.
