    Hi

    My system is:

    Duron 1.1ghz

    64mb ram

    30gb hard drive

    Windows ME

Lately I have been doing some downloading and have sometimes used over half of my hard drive, which has meant things like my internet have been running slower, so i decided i would buy a nec 3500 dual layer rewriter to free up my hard drive, but in doing this I had to download more apps to help me to burn my discs and also had to write some to the hard drive so i could copy which sent my free space down to about 8.5gb, but after I had burned some of my files the free space went back up to about 16gb. Last night I put my computer on and clicked on the internet icon it started up and then froze up so I ended the task and shut down my computer, then started it back up clicked on the internet icon and then nothing happened, so I used my norton's anti virus to scan, and it found 3 virus's which i quarantined and then deleted, still no joy so I went into start and clicked on the desk maintenance and it cleared up the temp internet stuff then it did the scan disk which seemed to take ages (It wasn't the thorough one though) and then it went onto the disk defrag which I left running overnight and this morning i checked my computer and it was still at 0%, but every so often it would go up to about 1 - 3 % then fall back to 0%, do any of you guys have an idea how I can solve this?

    Thanks in Advance

Try shutting down the AV and internet before running defrag. It will restart everytime something writes to the HD.

Booting in safe mode and defragging from their should solve your problem. If you don't mind installing one more app I would suggest installing diskeeper lite and using that. It is much quicker and will give you similar results, if not better, than using the windows defragger. Diskeeper Lite 7.0 Build 418

if your hard drive is really full, you might need a more extreme program like Raxco PerfectDisk. This tool will save you if your hard drive is really fragmented and there isn't a large amount of contiguous free space available. It takes a long time compared to other defraggers, but will completely defragment your free space enabling you to defrag you fragmented files. PerfectDisk 6.00.034

You don't seem to be in that much trouble so I would suggest either diskeeper or booting into safe mode and then running the windows defragger from there.

64 meg of RAM is pretty measly. More RAM will definitely help, if you can afford it. Defragging will certainly help as others have recommended earlier. I run my defrag program daily (Norton Spped Disk). Only takes a short time if run very frequently. Baz
