Defrag unusable

For about a year now I've not be able to defrag my harddrives. I'm attempting to use the disk defragmenter that came with the XP OS but each time it starts it sends me an error to the effect that an 'error has occurred in the' *.bmp file.
It usually one of two file names.
I know there are better programs out there but it really irks me that I can't figure this one out.
C: is FAT32
F: is NTSF.
The both show up in the defrag file but I cannot get it to analyze or defrag.
I've even tried reloading Windows elements from the XP upgrade disk to no avail. What am I missing?

 

dont know how to fix your problem but there are programs out there which work as well or better and definitely faster than the standard windows defragger. check around, we may have some on MG...

 

You are missing Diskepper LITE!!! And Maybe Norton Utilities!!!

Have you installed/ uninstalled a 3rd party disk defragmenter, like Diskeeper? If so:

Set the DCOM service to Automatic if you changed it to Manual

I'd first run a chkdsk on both partitions/drives.

basically run:

Click Start, then RUN, then type in CMD (press enter)

Type in chkdsk /r c: (press enter)
Yes, to any questions.

Type: Exit (press enter) to exit out of the command shell.

Reboot the computer to allow check disk to run....

Now try a defrag.
