I did a defrag and got the result pasted below. Error said my system performance is affected by a file(s) that could not defrag. Do I need to do anything?

The file listed at the end of your post that cannot be defragmented is a system restore file. Periodically (if my PC is running nice and clean and stable for awhile) I empty the system restore folder to free up drive space and to remove anything that may be lurking in the system restore folder. Many types of malware invade this folder so they can regenerate themselves even after a scan. Most scans will report that that any malware found in a system restore folder will be deleted, but 95% of the time, this isn't the case. As far as I know, the only way to empty the system restore folder is to turn off system restore, reboot, and re-enable it right away. Then set a new restore point right away.

    Assuming you are running XP...

    Start> Control Panel> System

On the window that pops up, click on the System Restore tab and then check the <Turn off system restore on all drives>

REMEMBER: Turn system restore back on after, by unchecking the box

Drive space starting to run low also (17%). Curious as to which defrag program you are running. dfrg.msc (Windows)? JKDefrag (free) and Perfect Disk (30 day trial) are good alternatives. Usually defrag in safe mode, and occasionally run check disk tool prior to a defrag.

Windows defragger by default cannot defrag some system files and files that are in use. You can try the free trial od Diskeeper Pro 2008 to defrag those; it works far better than the Windows defragger, and is also VSS compatible in Vista.

But definitely run a malware scan first, if you suspect that you have malware on your system. Also, run diskcleanup using Ccleaner so that you don't waste time defragging useless temp files and other junk. It will also make some extra space available and speed up the defrag.

To defrag the MFT and paging file, run Diskeeper's boot-time defrag.

Yes, I am on XP, and I used the defrag built into Windows. I'm running 17% as I have a ton of music and video files on the hard drive. It would be even less, but I have moved a lot to a new external drive.
