What is wrong with this Gateway computer. It has a 400 MHZ processor and win 98.A neighbor wanted me to check it out it wasnt running right.Went to defragment the harddrive but it gets stuck on 10% when it is defragging. It wont go any further. Is this a common problem and can it be fixed?

    Scandisk it
    Then defrag
Make sure turn off anything running in the background like antivirus before defrag
Um heck while you're at it check for viruses just for the heck of it.

Also make sure you don't have a screensaver going, on some computers they well restart it -.- making it seem it is stuck at a certain point.

You also might try doing defrag in Safe Mode. That's the only way I can get my Gateway to defrag.

Anti virus software will play havoc with a defrag, as will a screensaver. Just as the other two posters mentioned, turn them off before you defrag. Likewise with a firewall or any other monitoring software. In short, turn off/shutdown anything/everything you can before defraging. I have noticed on mine that it will appear to be stuck on a certain number for a long time and never seem to move on. If you haven't defraged in a long time it will take quite some time to accomplish. How full is the disk? Hard drives that are very full cannot defrag because ther isn't enough space to move the files while defraging and/or consolidating free space. I would suggest the above and set the comp to defrag just before going to bed. That way it has several hours to perform it's duties.

if you know someone with windows m.e. get a copy of their defrag.exe, it is the windows folder, then delete your 98 defrage .exe and paste the win m.e. defrag.exe file into win 98. this will speed up your defraging

Defragging - All of the above are true from bitter experience. The Me version is readily available if u want to track it down using a search and it is definitely better. However i am now using Diskeeper Lite which does a much better faster job and is free unless u want to ujpgrad to the Pro version> Give it a try.

I can't defrag in WinXP Pro normally. I always have to schedule it to run when starting windows. It'll work fine then.

    Tell me how.

It's the second time today that I've read that you can DEFRAG in SAFE MODE. Can someone please tell me what the command line is ?
I've tried telling it "defrag" or "DEFRAG" but my OS = Win98SE tells me that it can not do it (not exact words).

After reading this post I am thinking about all the solutions given here.

I have never had a problem with defraging my disk. I have used several programs to do this and I have always done it while running all the things that are mentioned above.

Now I am not saying that those things will not help or even fix the problem. I am saying I did not know there was a problem.

I have defragged my computer while running my firewall and my virus program. I use zone alarm and Panda. I also have quite a few programs that are always running at all times.

I have used the following and never had I had a problem with them

    Diskkeeper
    oo defrag
    raxco
    norton defrag
    windows defrag

I use oo defrag and I like it the best.

You've got WAY TOO MUCH stuff running in the background. Shut down all those things that run all the time -- that you don't NEED to run all the time -- like CD Burner software, and it'll defrag just fine in Windows.

Just a thought. (There's no other reason why defrag wouldn't work while you're in Windows.)

    my choice is VOPT !!!

I have been using VOPT for years now and never have a problem with and it is amazing fast it defrag my hard disk
    always under 5 minutes.

I am using and old version 6.2 they are at 7.22 now i think !!!
(6.2 work better if you have WIN98SE and ME.)
