Defragging

When I use Smart Defrag, not all files are defragged.

Via Windows defragger, not all files are defragged.

Windows Report shows there are two large items on C drive but I can't find out what they are. The comment says something about the files being those I defrag most often.

Help! How can I get them defragged?

That same issue had me going awhile back, it turned out to be anti virus log files. It may be the same thing on your machine.

    Hi

With NTFS and Windows XP and above, not all files will get defragged as some are locked by the system as "in use" try defragging in safe mode, but if you have formatted your HDD into NTFS dont worry about a few files that dont defrag as NTFS handles fragmentation really well.

Last time I defragged was 4 months ago, have on a quick scan only 1.29% fragmented files on a NTFS Windows 7 PC.

I use Ultra Defrag, it supports defrag of system locked files by having the ability to be set to defrag during the boot process. It is open sourced(free), and is found here: http://majorgeeks.com/UltraDefrag_d5727.html

    Many thanks for your help.

Oldphil - how do I find out? I use CrapCleaner daily, wouldn't it find logs?

Halo - I've forgotten how to start in Safe Mode. Could you remind me, please?

Jordan - Thanks. Downloaded that one and deleted Smart Defrag.

My C drive is pretty full. I've deleted many things lately but I have only 27% free, about 5MB.

Loads (90%) free on my D drive so I'm trying to move some programs over there.

    Hi

To enter safe mode tap F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking.

A full HDD can cause issues with defragging as the defrag app has no free HDD space to pop large files temporarily, I do get your 5MB is ment to be 5GB? so that could cause a partially defragged drive.

Thanks Halo. I'll try opening in Safe mode.

Sorry, yes, I meant 5 GB.

Off to see if I can do it.

Halo, if I had known MajorGeeks had UltrDefrag as a download, I would have given MajorGeeks as the link, no disrespect intended.

Don't worry, Jordan, I downloaded it from Major Geeks anyway.

Halo - Thanks for the info on Safe Mode. Tried defragging in Safe Mode but still several items sitting in there. I'll see if I can move some things to my D drive.

Be sure to check you ccleaner to verify you are having it scan for those .log files the defrag is saying is being left behind. Also, while in safe mode to defrag and just before, run ccleaner or a disk clean up. the system may be recreating the .log file after you had run your disk cleaner... although when the system boots again the .log file will be recreated in a noncontiguous file location anyway :cry :-D

    edit:
while in safe mode you can run your defrag from command prompt or from run. if you are in command prompt you can use the verbose switch to see a report of before and after ( -v ). or simply use defrag from run <this is what i tend to use> defrag.exe <volume> <switch>

    Hi

As your on XP and likely NTFS as the file system, dont worry too much about a few that cannot be defragged, its not a crucial thing, but what are the files listed as no-defraggable?

Low diskspace could be the issue though

    Thanks Break_Da and Halo.

I'll re-open in safe mode when I've done my morning tour of sites and give it another shot. However, I suspect Halo is right and it has to do with my low disk space.

I've had this computer for years and I have some hefty programs installed. I've tried to download some into my D Drive, which has 90% free space. I'm going to try moving some programs to D. Wish me luck.

    Just letting you know . . .

I ran Optimize in Ultradefrag and reduced the fragmented files from 2204 to 12. I have no idea what the files are, but it looks a bit better.

    Sounds better.

    Down to 7 fragmented.

Found out what the problem was with the massive file that couldn't be de-fragmented -- One of the family downloaded itunes. I deleted via Control Panel and thought I'd deleted it everywhere else. Not so. Turns out it was too large to place in my recycle bin. A window popped up to tell me that and ask if I wanted to delete it anyway. Finally it's gone! Now we might get back to normal.

After your work in defragging....is the system running better? Noticeably faster?

Not really, although it closes down faster. But I increased my free space on C to 7.15Gb and 39%, way up from 5Gb and 27%. Some of this is the result of defragging but I also moved several photographs to my D drive. I still have 89% free in there so I'm looking to move videos as well.

I think much of the "slowness" on my computer has to do with my Avast virus program. It updates automatically but then it must check every program on my computer because I can hear something working way. I'm not complaining because it's done a good job so far.

    HI

Getting there on the defrag, yes if you can get a few large video files moved then the defrag apps should have enough temp hdd space to defrag the whole system, but as I mentioned earlier, dont think that you will get all defragged as in the main not all files will, system locked generally dont, they are really small in most cases.

What version of Avast? Get the lastest one of you have not already, but custom install it as some things you may not need, I dont use p2p so dont need that module, hardly use Messengers these days so dont install that Module either and dont add the Email module, but thats a personal pref, but running less modules can help speed of PC.

    Thanks, Halo.

I updated Avast with the newest version a few days ago. Like you, I don't use P2P or Messenger.

When I open Avast, I have no idea what all the abbreviations mean. I think Messenger might be ahResMes.dll and ahResp2p.dll must be P2P. Can I go ahead and delete those?
