Defragmenter problem

Hello all.

I'm just trying to defragment my secondary drive. I've emptied all but 60 gig of the drive. the remainder is heavily fragmented and won't defragment. There's a list of problem files in the report. Other than deleting these files, is there a way around this problem?

I assume you are trying to defrag the 80 gig? You probably have some files that are too big to move around, so even though you have 20 free gigs, apparently it's not enough room to defrag. Try moving some of your larger files and programs (especially pictures, since they take up lots of space) until you have even more free space on your 80, and then try to defrag again. Hope this helps.

 

Did u try running disk cleanup/deleted older restore points etc?If you run the built in, ensure that no program runs and interrupts during the defrag. I would suggest downloading a third party tool which will defrag faster, some of them can be scheduled to run in the background and do the task efficiently.

 

It's the big drive that i'm defragmenting, I'll try a third party app and see how it goes. i tried everything else you all mentioned. Just for the record, what would be the best one to use?

 

I use O&O - It's not free but presumably the download includes a trial run. It was not all that expensive to buy even here in Aussie where our dollar is worth less than the $US. Have used it for a year now without hassles and definite improvement in puter speed whenever I run it

I second that.

O&O is good at tough defrag jobs ( low free space, and large fragmentation)
it's a top notch program.

 

Reckon I'll third that. O&O is all I use nowadays. I used to be a big fan of VoptXP, but after a friend turned me onto O&O, I now use it exclusively. Great program.

 

I got a trial of diskeeper, and it worked great, but they want £45 (USD$75 ish) for the pro version. I'll try O&O next time. it's still a bit pricey though...
