Hey, i've noticed that my computer has slowed down a bit, after doing spyware/virus scans i figured that since i havn't defragmented my computer in a while, that that could be it. So first, i try to use the Disk Defragmenter that comes with XP... I click analyze.. and it says "Disk Defragmenter could not start" so i figured Windows is being a bitch. So i download a free trail of Diskeeper, i install it, load it up, and click Analyze and it says "Diskeeper Could Not Initialze" Now for some reason, defragmenting tools do not want to work... Any suggestions?

*Note it says the same thing when i try to click Defragment withou analyzing..

Running on XP SP2, AMD Sempron

Make sure your logical disk management service are running.
    Control panel>administrative tools>services

Had a similar problem long time ago and solved it by getting rid of all the junk files that had accumulated (CrapCleaner Available here at MG) and killing every program running except explorer.exe and systray.
    Cheers

systray doesn't apply to XP like in earlier OS's.

For complete services explanations and general tweaking see Black Vipers guide hosted here at MG's.

@ DarkFable...if you do indeed end up resorting to disabling the majority of your services so you can run disk defragementer be sure to disconnect from the interent (pull the plug) cuz without you AV and firewall (if you have a software one) you'll open a whole new can of worms.

Do you have sufficient free space on the HDD? Also, have you run check disk to check the volume for errors. Sometimes defrag won't initialize if you potentially have errors on the drive (from improper shutdown, ect). That is not to say you have errors, but you may be required to run check disk before it will work. Just a thought.
