    I have installed defragmentor lite on my computer, whenever I reboot it appears fine and dandy, I'm on windows xp.
    But in the instructions it says it's integrated into windows and I just have to click the properties tab to defragment what I want. I've tried this but there are no new tabs appearing when I click properties, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, rebooting and all the obvious things.

    if no one can help, can anyone recommend another freeware defragmenter that is good. As The Windows programme supplied with XP can't defragment the volume of stuff on one of my hard drives, and I don't want to mess about moving things between drives again.

    Why can't the windows defrag program defrag your hd ?

    Try looking in the Disk Utilities section of MajoGeeks Download Pages

    Windows defragmenter will work if you close down all programs running in the background and let it get on with its job. Bigger the HD partition the longer it will take. In your case I would Startup in Safe mode and try from that point.
    As an aside I spent some $$ on O&O defragger and it keeps my aging box humming along beautifully

    It gives a message saying it needs 15 percent more free space to defragment properly, it will do it but I imagine not as well as it should.

    How much RAM have you installed in your PC?
    The more RAM you have, the more space XP reserves on your hard drive as a swapfile.

    Typically it is 1.5 times your RAM that it allocates from your hard drive.
    You might try reducing the size of your swapfile, temporarily, while you run Defrag, to gain more hard drive free space, Don't set it to zero.

    To check out the virtual memory settings on your PC.
    Start-->Control Panel.
    Select System (double click)--> Advanced then click Settings in the Performance section. Next choose the Advanced tab here. Then down to Virtual memory and click Change.

    This will show you your 2 settings. Initial size and Maximum size.
    If you don't feel comfortable mucking about with these settings, THEN DON'T.

    Report back here, one way or the other. I may be offline when your report back due to time zone differences.
    Others may hop in to help further. Bazza
