deleating a file that is read only on Vista OS

I have some folders and files that are read only that I want to delete.
How do I change it so it is no longer read only?

i'm under XP and i need to boot into safe mode to permanently change my permissions (my issue was specifically for System Volume Information). i'm not under Vista, but i think i read you need to do that sort of thing as an admin. may be as simple as "run as admin" but i'm not sure.

 

i really want to give some help but i am using xp OS.
How about trying to right click on the read only folders and files and select "property", disenable the "read only". Then try to delete again. (If there is still the problem, restart and try again)

 

Open up Notepad

Click File>Save
save it as unreadonly.bat INSIDE THE SAME FOLDER AS THE FILE YOU ARE TRYING TO CHANGE
change Text Documents to All Files (the drop down list under the filename text box)
go to the folder, and double click the icon of the new file
in the command prompt window that it opens, type in the name of the file you are trying to get rid of, and press enter
then you can delete them

I will try this. Will this also work on folders that I can not open and are marked read only??

I would use a boot disk - the Ubuntu live CD would do just fine - boot to it and use the file manager to delete it.
