talk me out of this or wish me luck..............

audio and video files were playing excellent. Then I got a new video file on Friday and it wouldn't open. Once I got it open, it was choppy, out of sync, etc.
Now almost all of my video files are choppy. So I did something.

So now I've decided the best thing to do is to delete all codecs, then install a codec pack.
The thing is I'm not too sure how to do it. I could search my system for any file ending in .dll or .ax and delete them all.

    Any suggestions?

and i should mention I have been working on this all day and night for 4 days on almost no sleep. I tried different codecs, different media players, I tried editing software to sync the videos, I've used Gspot so much I never want to hear that name again. This is a last resort, but I believe I have tried every other alternative.

Kinda hard to help, not knowing "everything" you tried, and what OS ye are running.

I do assume, you tried add/remove programs?
    Video driver updates?

yep, I used the add/remove to get rid of a bunch of programs.

I've run the gamit of CC, CWS, Adaware, Spybot, AVG.

    I've Defragged the HD.

I've run about 7 different media players including VLC.

I've gone back and downloaded the video files numerous times.

The file is not corrupt. It ran fine at the begining. I had another file that didn't work so well. In trying to fix that one I've made the others choppy.

Gspot says the codecs are installed for sum files. On another, Gspot doesn't really say anything except something about a source file 0x80040241 (i know that number by heart, I've looked at it so much). Gspot can render sum but not all. Gspot is new to me, so I'm trying to understand it. I don't think it can help.

At one point, WMP was telling me I needed a YUY2 codec, that has now gone away, but the files are really choppy.

I have 1 file out of about 10 that is working fine, before all but one worked. I think I screwed something up and thought It's probably best to start over.

    Another suggestion.

Click START, then RUN, then type in: msconfig (press enter).

Click the radial button "selective startup".
    Uncheck "Load startup items".
Ok, yes, to reboot. Still choppy?

msconfig - I found that suggestion a few days ago, the problem is I get an error window telling me that msconfig can not be found.

Afterdawn- yep, seen it. I'm a little confused on step one though = remove all codecs. It says to remove them but not how to remove them.

Thanks for taking your time and trying to come up with solutions!
