delete cookies

I am trying to delete the cookies in c:\windows\cookies but am unable to because the first icon in the upper left is a "INDEX.DAT" and it is preventing the rest of the other 450 cookies from being deleted. How can I get past "INDEX.DAT" to delete? O/S is WinME. Thanks, moif.

 

index.dat is a system file.

 

This will also do the job: Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Cookies

Another convienient free utility that will do that and a lot more, including nuking those index.dat files (which is also a good idea) is CrapCleaner.

I think I must be the only one who uses Cleanup! as no-one else seems to recommend it but I think it is great. Running all 3 above, catches most of the stuff you accumulate. All 3 are free, don't conflict with each other and are part of my daily maintenance after logging off the net.

As for index.dat, I have a small batch file in autoexec.bat that deletes them (there are more than 1 created every net session), every bootup.

Do a find/search for index.dat (must have view all files set, though) and you will find more than 1 instance of index.dat.

I use W98SE but the batch file should also work in ME (I believe)

Please forget my link to Cleanup!. Two programs with the same name. The version you need,and that I use, is from http://www.stevengould.org/ not the MG linked one that I gave.

It is up to version 3.1 and is freeware. Sorry for the stuff up. Bazza

 

You could also left click on the dat. file.
Go to Edit
Invert Selection
Go to File
Delete.
