Good evening geeks, I'm running XP Home SP3.

    This is kind of scary.

Look at the image Recycle01 attached, and note that in the recycle bin there is an indication that there is something in the bin, but note after I open the recycle bin window it is empty.

Now look at Recycle02 and see what happens if I right click the recycle bin and select "Empty Recycle Bin".

Am I sure I want to delete Windows? No...I'm not!

    Any ideas?
What if I use Tweak UI, deselect the recycle bin icon, restart, then select it, will it refresh itself?

    Hi Keni

Wooo now thats a scary message if ever I've seen one, but you may just have a fudged up recycle bin or a hidden file in it called Windows, so just check for hidden files first, Tools > Folder Options > View and check the Show hidden files and folders bit, then check for hidden files in the bin.

Could be as simple as creating a blank text file on your desktop and then deleting it, then empty your bin, or right click the bin and choose Properties > Global and move the slider to zero then click OK, then reboot and then move the slider back to where it was originally.

You could boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot) and Empty the Recycle Bin and reboot Windows normally, but check on that message again first.

If you do still get it when emptying the bin in Safe Mode try this registry fix from Doug Knox (well respected in computing circles for his registry fixes) link is HERE download to desktop and double click to merge with your registry, then try the emptying the bin again.

Thanks for the advice, I've tried everything you suggest with no success. Ready to try the Doug Knox registry fix but the link you gave me opens up code in a new browser tab, how do I double click that to merge with the registry?

On a new but parallel issue, I noted several months ago and just now again during this fix that the F2, F8 and F12 keys DO NOT work during boot up. The only way I can get to Safe Mode is through msconfig. The only things I've been able to find on the internet are a few forum posting that seem to blame a USB keyboard, which I use because wireless keyboards seem to break every year, I've gone through three.

    Any ideas here?

I'm wondering if maybe there is something missing in my boot.ini file, which I have attached.

    Hello,
As far as the reg file problem, do not click the link. Right click it as select "Save Target As" (IE) or "Save Link As" (firefox) to your desktop. Then you can double click it in an admin account.

As far as the Boot.ini file goes. I did not recognize the TUtag= and some number. Can you show the whole line. Is there a mention of Kernel in this line? From a search it seems that you have installed Tune UP Utilities. Do you still have that program installed?

I was able to solve the registry problem and not being able to open .pdf files by re-associating the file type with a new pdf viewer.

Yes, Tune Up Utilities is still installed, has been for years, my favorite do all utility.

The last part of that boot.ini line is TUTag=8Z4I4M
