now that i have both msn and yahoo competing against one another not to mention several programmes I'm not sure i want, i have a list of questions about deleting things.
if i take them in order of annoyance can you lot tell me what to do.

    first:-
yahoo and MSN both pop up the messenger service and 'today' each time i log on. i don't mind having yahoo and msn messenger but i would like them to be quiet about it. i do not want yahoo or MSN 'today' at all.

    aloha

    to stop them go to
    start
    run
    msconfig
    start up
    uncheck both
    reboot

Also in MSN, go tools, options, general, Display "MSN today" on logon.

I hate it too, first thing i get rid of myself :)

if you don't want to have to mess with both instant messengers you can get trillian or gaim.

meandoggie, it wont let me play with its toys! boo hoo. it sez:-

You have used sys. config. utility to make changes to the way windows starts.
the sys. config. is currently in diagnostic or selective start up mode causing this message to be displayed, and the utility to run every time windows starts..
choose the normal start up mode on the general tab to start windows normally and undo the changes you made using sys. config. utility.

    so......?

    aloha.

ps i need help with zonealert. see firewall thread.

    In Yahoo go to Messenger/Preferences/General.
Most of what you asked about Yahoo is found there :)

laurieB. You may have missed the significance of this answer. Trillian can be used in place of MSN and Yahoo and others. All-in-one combination. I haven't tried it yet so cannot comment how it works. If you try it, let us know. Bazza
PS; Some posts in MG recommend Trillian. Baz

ok. that done my next big issue is which MS applications can i delete.
window xp home was preinstalled. i added office 2000.
MS money.....i do not pay bills on my puter. i do not 'dabble' in stocks and shares. do i need this for anything ? if i delete it will it take other programmes out?
MS works....i use this but only the w.p.
msn encarta plus....i don't even know what this is.
windows media player......i think i need this to download Cd's etc.
windows messenger.....do i really need a third messenger. i already have yahoo and msn, or is this different.
windows movie maker.....i cant see my self making movies but it might be possible in the future to get a video cam, so would i need this for editing?
windows journal viewer....dont know what this is for.
ms office power point.....i need this as its the thing my son uses at school and all his work is supposed to be on powerpoint...not used yet!!!
MS office small business tools......i am thinking of starting my own interior design business so i suppose that might be handy?
    MS office tools.....is that different?
MS office picture it......dont know what this does. i have Kodak easyshare which enable me to edit my pics. i am increasing my interest in photography and a friend is gonna give me 'photoshop' so do i need this?
MS excell....dont know what this does
    MS outlook.....i use IE
MS publisher.....i cant see myself writing a book
MS word.....should i use this instead of works?

my question is which of these programmes is safe to delete or should i even be bothering with this.

    aloha

MS Works is redundant if you have MS Office - which includes MS Word (a word processor), MS Excel (a spreadsheet application), MS Outlook (e-mail and meeting planning - this is not a browser but the Office edition of Outlook Express), MS Powerpoint (a presentation tool). Note, can you read MS Works word processing documents in MS Word and vice-versa but go with Word as it has more functionality.

MS Office Tools may be required if you want additional MS Office functionality.

    Encarta is an encyclopaedia.

MS Money can be used for planning your home finances.

MS Picture It is probably redundant in your case especially if you are using other similar software.

    so i don't need :-
    MS works
    MS money
    MS pictures

    what about :-
    windows messenger
    windows journal viewer
    MS publisher

should i even be worrying about this? if i take off programmes that were preinstalled will it screw my puter up. are there more risks to removing them than keeping them. (i am not pressed for 'space',)
don't unused programmes slowly get shuffled off this mortal PC coil?

bear in mind that i dont have a clue what im doing. :)

    Hi Laurie!( spelling?.)
    IMHO
If you are not pressed for space......." It is better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it."

  18. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

i think your right. i think i just need to shuffle it all around so the programmes i use are easier to find. i was looking at the amount of space they took up and MS money is really the only one that is totally unnecessary. ( i don't have enough money to need a prgramme to manage it lol) most of the others are 'bits' of programmes. if i ever need the space ill come here for instructions.

in the interests of 'shuffling things around', i was trying to get rid of all the pages that i do not visit that are on the 'favorites' list. three quarters of them are there thru no doing of mine. however. when i delete them, am i truly deleting them, or am i just removing them from the list? i keep getting scary messages saying 'are you sure you want to delete this entire file, and remove it to the recycle bin?". no, i don't want to delete the file. i just want to remove it from the list of favorites. i have gone to all the help buttons and typically, i cannot find anything on the subject, either because I'm using the wrong words, or cos its not in there. the thing that gets to me is that these machines appeared set up to
    1) only use stuff that suits the purposes of MS
    2) make it incredibly difficult for you to change anything that suits the purposes of MS.

computers today are supposed to be 'user friendly'. there not. there 'user manipulative'. rant...rave..... anyway guys tell me what to do. thanx aloha Laurie.

    Greetings
Some one else might have a better way.
What I do is go to documents and settings in " c "
    drive.
Open it and click the user name.
Go to favorites and open it.
Right click a blank part of the screen and select " New"
    ":Folder "
    Name it.
and drag and drop what you dont want to see in it.
I am hoping you are using Internet Explorer.
    These shortcuts are small,
    probably less than 3k each.
