    Windows XP, Word 2000

On D drive, I deleted an earlier version of a document but I want it back. Both documents have the same name.

I installed Glary_Undelete, found the document, and restored it to C drive. Windows won't open it and asks me to install a CD. This computer came with Word installed so I don't have a CD.

Any idea how I can get the document back in readable format?

P.s. Installed Reuva but it isn't compatible with -32.

Message says: Word cannot start converter mswrd632.wpc.

    What do I do now?

    Re: HELP!! Deleted files

If you have an image - Macrium free or Acronis paid - backed up to an external drive, you can recover the doc. as is.
    See my post dated 7 - 10.
Other than that, one of the techier MG's will have to jump in!
    Good luck.

    Hi

Try this information and the FixIt HERE

Macrium Reflect or Acronis True Image would only help if you had them installed, as you dont then its nto going to help you sadly. Could try this, I forget if its down to using a network with XP or was built into SP2/3 in that if you know the folder you originally saved the Doc to then right click thet folder and choose Properties then click the Previous Versions tab and open one of the previous versions, see if your doc is there if it is then right click and copy then paste it to your desktop and open it... may or may not work (not on an XP computer to test at moment).

    Many thanks, Halo.

I tried Fixit and then tried to recover the document. It didn't work. I also closed and restarted my computer thinking that would help.

I also tried to follow the instructions and fix it myself.
    For 32-bit versions of Windows:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text Converters\Import\MSWord6.wpc

When I reached Import, all it shows me is: HTML, MSWinWrite.wpc, MSWord8, and Recover.

I know the document was on D drive in July and early August 2010. Right clicking the directory where the document was doesn't give me a Properties/Previous Version option.

Glary is recovering documents but I can't open.

I wrote Halo a note. I know you currently have your hands full but I was just encouraging you to do what the good folks at MGS did for me. Imaging, similiar to backing up -but very different, is a fabulous tool and if you ask they will be gald to help you, as will I.

    Thanks.

The problem is that the folder on D drive holds my current document. The one I deleted and want back is an earlier version with a slightly different name. I can't remember if the name contained a - or not.

    Still trying Search.

Previous versions only exist in Vista and later, never in XP AFAIK. Even in Vista, unless you had a version higher than Home Premium, it isn't available though can be simulated with Shadow Explorer.

Lavender - install Search Everything. It will quickly create an index to everything on your drive after which entering any part of a filename will immediately reveal every file on your computer meeting the search criteria. If your previous version does still exist this program will find it.

    Thanks for your help.

Downloaded and ran the program. Unfortunately, it will not allow me to scan my D Drive, only A and C.

From what I can see, Everything doesn't scan for documents deleted. What am I doing wrong?

Let me see if I have this right. You deleted a file, recovered it but cannot open because word will not recognize? (or you no longer have program to open it)

Also you have another copy of file but cannot find it as it is in a partition you cannot read.

If the first is somewhat your situation, have you tried opening with "open Office"?

If the second is true, there is a program called "hex editor" it is advanced software, but may do the job for you.

    Best of luck

    Thanks, Magoo. Love the bird.

I've been thinking of reinstalling OpenOffice, but it is such a huge program that I only ever used to print pdfs. I've used it in the past to open WordPerfect documents.

The main problem is that the Folder has the same name as the documents it contains with an added The. Many documents were overwritten as I made edits, but one document contained a slightly different name. That's the one I can't find and restore. The ones I have restored, to see if they might be the version, are the ones I can't open.

I'll give OO a try but that's the last program I'm going to download to find this darned document.

Earlier in the thread, someone mentioned an external backup. I have one of those. :-o HP Simplesave Portable.

I'm so not technically inclined that I didn't even connect it with what was said. :-o Now I have. :-o

I never used it to restore until today. :-o I found the file I needed and have restored it. :-o

I am so sorry to have taken up your time with this. :-o

I'm away now to hang my head in shame. :-o

Change my user name to Twit! :-o

    Re: Dleted Files Help [Lavender]

Sorry for the delayed response Lavender - house problems! The program doesn't look for deleted files so you didn't do anything wrong, it is simply the best way to find lost or duplicated documents where you aren't sure of the full filename. Do keep it as you will find it very useful. It isn't searching your D drive because that drive is your HP recovery drive and isn't used in normal operations.

Pleased you finally recovered your lost file :)
