hello, I downloaded a movie from the internet (ext.avi). However when i try to delete it, a message comes up saying that the file is being used by another progam and cannot be deleted. I checked on the internet and found a solution to this issue - by deleting a file form the windows register. It worked...for a while. Now whenever I restart my pc, the folder(empty) keeps appearing on my desktop. How do i get rid of it permanently?

Try getting the unlocker http://majorgeeks.com/Unlocker_d4660.html and install.
Then try to delete the file. An unlocker window should come up telling you what program is trying to use the file. Is it explorer.exe or something else?

    Once you know what program is using the file click on "Unlock All" in the unlocker window and see if it can delete the folder. {I'm guessing the folder is related to the name of the already deleted avi?}

    Hi frodo66

No unlocker is a freeware application, and follow Sachs instructions also if this doesnt work in Normal Mode, reboot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot > Safe Mode with Networking) and try again.

Other options are to delete this

    1. Pocket Killbox
    2. MoveOnBoot this one, once you dragNdrop the file or browse for its location, deletes the file on reboot, so any applications that have locked the file are not running so cannot lock it before deletion

Also try these in both Normal and Safe Mode to delete the file.

    Hello again,
I installed unlocker as suggested and then restarted my pc to get the 'ghost' folder. I right-clicked on the folder and deleted it....i did not see any window come up from the 'unlocker' program. The folder is now sitting in the recycle bin...

i tried deleting using "unlocker"....it said "no locking handle found". I still deleted it from unlocker and it deleted, but came back up when i restarted.
I next tried using unlocker to rename and move i to a next folder. When i restarted my pc again, the folder which i moved it to contained the ghost folder (renamed), but the original ghost foldder returned to my desktop!!
I did not try "killbox" or "moveonboot" as i believe these may have to be purchased.
    Help!

It doesn't sound like it is a problem with deleting the folder but a problem of it being recreated. What program did you use to download the folder and avi? Are you absolutely sure that that program isn't trying to download it again? Maybe open the program and make sure there is no reference to the avi in the program.

it is realy a problem of the folder reappearing...the folder is empty (0 bytes)..and the movie is not being downloaded

Assuming you used a p2p app for this movie (tsk ;) ), is it possible the app is recreating it because the torrent is still active in the program, when it starts up?

Can't hurt to uninstall said program and see, if thats the case.

No both freeware, but agreed with Adryn on deleting the p2p app if thats the one with its hooks in this file or you still have it listed as a download/upload, but try those applications and in normal and safe mode.

I don't believe i had used the P2P software that i am using right now to download the movie (Vuze)....but i will uninstall it and try deleting and checking again.
Initially to delete the folder, i had followed instructions that i found in the webpage below. I was able to delete the file, but the reappearing folder issue came up after i rebooted. I am now unsure if the key i deleted has anything to with the new issue.
Would be happy for more advice.

    Hi

If its re-apearing the likelyhood is that the appication you are using is re-creating it once deleted, this is normal, but what you may have to do is to go into the programs menus and move the default location of the folder.

As you mention Vuze, is that what you are using and is the folders name Download? but in Vuze click Tools > Options > Files and move the Default directory somewhere else like My Documents

i will try relocating the folder tonite.
The folder's name is the name of the movie (not Download).

I relocated the folder, but it keeps appearing on the desktop after startup - in fact it is always the last folder to appear (just before the pc is ready for use).
I deleted Vuze - problem still exists.

What program did you use to download the file/folder?
Check Start>All Programs>Startup folder, is there any program set to open?
Check Start>Run>type in msconfig hit OK. Under the Startup tab is there any P2P program listed? [Hit Cancel to exit msconfig]

I am not sure of the program....it was my first attempt at downloading a movie from the internet (Torrentpond.com website) and i was unfamiliar with the method to do it. I didnt realise at the time that i required a program like Vuze. When i opened the torrent, it automatically created the folder on the desktop.
The program in the startup folder is Bluetooth.
I am not seeing any P2P progam listed under the startup tab.
