Deleted items don't go to recycler

When i delete items from desktop or folders, a dialouge box pops up that asks "are you sure you want to delete 'xxxxxx'?", instead of prompting me to send the file(s) to the recycle bin. it is the same message that pops up when you emtpy the recylce bin. the file is therefore just deleted entirely, skipping the recycle bin altogether. this problem happens randomly, I can fix it temporarily in the command window, but this is annoying. what causes this problem and how can I permanently fix it? thanks.

    What OS are you using?

Typically, you can do the following:

Right click on the "Recycle Bin" select "Properties".

Uncheck the box "Do not move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted."

Does it happen with everything you delete?

    Thank you for your responses:

I am running windows XP home.

This doesn't happen with everything I delete. It happens sporadically, and I fix it using a process I was told to use when I had the same problem on another computer (which was infested with a CWS virus). This process, which I enter into the command box, is

    attrib -s -h c:\recycler

    then

    del c:\recycler

after I do this, the problem seems to be fixed, but the problem comes back at random times.

Theefool, as for the properties of the bin, I checked them and it is exactly as it should be, display dialouge is checked, and "do not move files to recycle bin" is unchecked.

You could try deleting and recreating the Recycle Bin, but that means a trip to the Registry so take all necessary precautions! (Including creating a Restore Point)

Start, run and type in regedit then click OK. Navigate to the following key,

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace

    Find the following key, {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

Delete it and it should delete the Recycle Bin, then reboot.

To restore the Recylce Bin simply recreate the key again.

    Insomniac,
I deleted and recreated the key, however when I tested it out it gave me the same dialogue that I don't want. Just to clarify, the dialogue I want is "Do you want to move this to the recycle bin?", not "Do you want to delete this?". So i went back into the command console and fixed it with my process again, so my problem isn't solved. I checked the recycle bin properties as well, tried different combinations but nothing is working. thanks
