How do you permanently delete files so they can't be recovered? Does a defrag after a delete assure that the files can't be retrieved?

    Thanks

    Hi and Welcome to Majorgeeks

No a defrag may not do this in making sure files cannot be retrieved. What you can do is use an application dedicated to multipass secure erasing and two quick suggestions and free ones are Eraser and CCleaner

Both use standards that are used my DoD, NSA and others to erase and write over the erased data with junk, so that recovery is near on impossible unless the recovery is being done by DoD, NSA or FBI etc but even then a 7 pass erase will be near impossible to recover and peice together any data, so for home use, a 3 pass will suffice IMO.

So in CCLeaner the option to secure delete is in the Options > Settings menu and use the drop down under secure deletion to pick the method of deletion, doing multipass erasing can take some time as its not a quick process, but you want to be sure that the data is fully erased.
