Hey guys! I want to clear my system of those horrible file inside Index.dat

I referred to this post http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/showthread.php?t=33902&highlight=index.dat

But there were some things I was unclear of.

    Someone said use CrapCleaner.
I have run CrapCleaner, and it hasn't cleared my Index.dat files. My Index.dat has 64 KB in it still.

    Some also said:
"You could also left click on the dat. file.
    Go to Edit
    Invert Selection
    Go to File
    Delete."

Would that delete the WHOLE file though? I just want to delete the contents inside.

Index.dat is a blackmailers best friend. LOL :p

But anways how do I get rid of them?

Crap Cleaner will erase the contents of index.dat files, but it won't delete them.

The simplest way to delete them is to boot to Safe Mode Command-Prompt and run del /s index.dat from the root directory of your drive.

Wait... so CrapCleaner erases the Index.dat files... but they still remain inside of the file? Sorry if this isn't making sense to me. lol.

    Safe mode scares me....

Crap Cleaner erases the data inside the files but won't change the size of the file. If it grows to be 5MB it'll stay 5MB, but the urls and stuff inside will be gone.

Safe Mode is easy, that's how I kill my index.dat files. Ya gotta try it if ya wanna be a geek!

    Hey thanks!

But I had a "bad" experience with safe mode I guess you could say.

When I had my Windows 95 computer (or was it Windows 98) Don't remember it was like... 4 or 5 years ago. But anyway curiosity stepped in replacing my brain, and I was like "ooooo whats safe mode" So I booted into safe mode and it was weird man it was way different than regular mode. Scared the heck out of me. LOL

    The end.

In Windows XP, is Stand By safe mode?

No! Stand By has to do with power down levels. Safe mode is the Windows diagnostics mode. When you start the computer in Safe mode, only the specific components that are needed to run the operating system are loaded.

To boot into safe mode take a look at this link, it cover all windows OS's:
