Deleting old Program - Problem

I tried to delete a program by deleting the dircectory that contained it. I know now that this was a mistake and that I should have used the delete program in the "control panel". That being said - how do I finish the job? The delete program shows the software that I want to delete but won't let me delete the program. The computer came with the software that I'm trying to delete and I don't have the disks to reinstall. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Will this remove all references to the program. The reason I ask is - that I would like to install a newer version of the same program which I could not do with the older version still on my computer.

No, it will not. By deleting the folder the application was installed to, you deleted the file that had all the info on everything that was installed. The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility removes all registry entires that relate to the Add/Remove programs folder. As far as Windows is concerned, the application is not longer listed as installed.

For most applications, that is enough.

If that doesn't work, you can also go into the registry. Nearly every application you install creates a subkey in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE. Usually it's the name of the application or the name of the application publisher. Often, it's also the only key that is created. Deleting it might convince an application that it hasn't been installed.

I downloaded the windows uninstaller. It doesn't list MusicMatch Jukebox (the program that Im trying to unistall). The add / remove program in the control panel lists this program, however, when I try to use it I get an error that says unable to find installation log file.

Try this link, http://majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html, I have used this regularly to clean the registry. It will also uninstall old programs, and remove old entries automatically.

A friend of mine had trial version of ZA on his PC and couldn't install the paid for version. There was some error message that I can't remember, but after removing the trial version with Reg Cleaner all was OK. The pay version installation went fine. Good Luck http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

Try reinstalling the program and then uninstall it.

Very odd that the Windows tool didn't see it. Hm. I wonder if it only "sees" programs that the Windows Installer service installed? I've never had it not find anything, but then I've only really had to use it when Office 2000 would screw up. Kaputnick's suggestion should work for removing old uninstall entires.

Well I used the registry cleaner and was able to remove the program from the registry. Doing this allowed me to install the newer version of musicmatch that came with my mp3 player. However, when I start the program i get a C++ abnormal program termination related to mmjb.exe (i assume this is musicmatch juke box). Can this also be related to the old program still being on the computer in some fashion? I've uninstalled and reinstalled however this does not work either.

I've since gone to musicmatch website did a search on "error" and got the below which looks like it might be on point since Ive got XP running. However, where it asks me to select the security tab - i don't have this option. Any suggestions.

Errors running Musicmatch Jukebox from Win XP limited user accounts

Receiving errors while running Musicmatch Jukebox from Windows XP limited user accounts appears to be due to the rigid file system security enforced by the NTFS file system in Windows XP. It can be relatively involved to alter these security settings, but this process should enable you to allow all users to use Musicmatch Jukebox. Please do the following to resolve this error and provide access to limited user accounts:

    - Restart your PC. During the restart, hold down the F8 key to see the troubleshooting menu.
    - At the troubleshooting menu, select "Safe Mode".
    - At the log-in display, click on "Administrator".
    - Click the "Start" button.
    - Select "Run".
    - Type "c:\program files\" (without the quotes) in the Open box.
    - Click "OK".
    - Right-click the "Musicmatch" folder.
    - Select the "Properties" menu option.
    - Select the "Security" tab.
    - Click the "Advanced" button.
    - Click the "Add" button.
    - Make sure that "Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here" is selected.
    - Under "Enter the object names to select", type "Everyone" in the box provided.
    - Click the "OK" button.
    - In the "Permission Entry for Musicmatch" window, select the "Full Control" checkbox in the "Allow" column.
    - Click the "OK" button in three windows as required to close all windows.

Now restart your system, then login using the regular user account, and try using Musicmatch JUKEBOX. You should now be able to run the software without any problems.

If you are now able to run Musicmatch Jukebox and have not already done so, you will need to change the locations of your MP3 files and rebuild your Music Library so that all users can access the files.

Please do the following to clear your Music Library and re-add all your tracks from their new locations:

If you are using XP Home then the Security tab is only available in Safe Mode under the Administrator Account or an User Account that belongs to the Administrator Group.
