I'm embarrassed to say, that I have YEARS-WORTH of setup files on a PC that has a small hard drive (only 40GB) and runs XP.

Is there some central-location on this PC where I can go to remove/delete these in one full-swope please? Otherwise, I'm afraid I will be searching forever for them individually...

    Thanks in advance...

Glenn, are these setup .exe's for various apps? It depends on your browser settings, where these have been saved. I think you use Firefox :)

Tools>Options> Main Tab. In the "Save files to" browse the options and check.
It depend where you opted for. By default it in "Downloads".

But they could be in Desktop,Apps, etc. Could also be in a third party download manager folder if you've used one. You will have to search!
    Cheers..:wave

    Hi Glenn

Unless as Sikvik mentions they are all downloaded to one location as in downloads folder etc then no easy way, was going to suggest you use Windows Search and search for .exe and .msi files but you'd have to be very careful at what you delete, so knowing that at times you and PCs dont mix well, dont think this would be right option as you may just accidently delete a file thats needed from Program Files or Windows, System/32 etc, so best is to manually go through the locations you downloaded files to and delete them

Then create for future a Downloads folder and aim all download to that folder, I do this and its a great way to know what you have on PC, also in same folder I have other folders that are catagroies, say Windows Files, Security, Audio apps, Email Apps etc so they are easily found and much easier to delete the contents of a catagory that way, over searching through many files.

I created a folder in My Documents called "All my downloads" so the folder being listed alphabetically will appear on top of the page where it's easy to find. Then I deleted the default My Downloads folder, and told FF to send all downloads to the new folder. :cool

    Thank you both very much.

There is probably not as much "excess" on the machine as I thought there was (?).

I suppose what I'm trying to get at is what I'll refer to as "bloat" on this particular machine, and looking for any possible way to free-it-up...to see if I can gain any improvement in its response time, that ccleaner won't get (or either of the other two drive cleaners that I occasionally use).

My machines tend to become very sloppy..."cluttered" is probably a better word. At the risk of sounding very UN-tech like, I think things tend to get "lost" or misplaced...sort of "wedged" into the various cracks and crevices of my machines.

I went ahead an deleted some things that I know were useless and just taking-up space...old software program setup files (and new ones for that matter), the photos that had been otherwise used or were not good (duplicates, etc.), and a little bit of music (music files) that was not necessary to have.

I'll run CCleaner along with ATF Cleaner, and CleanUp!, and I'll run the small alternative defrag program I have on here (I forget the name of it at the moment) and see if that does much of anything.

Oh, also, some things (setup files) have probably been downloaded to IE as well over the years - can you tell me the procedure for checking in that browser as I just did with Firefox (?), though I may already know the procedure and just don't realize it...

    Thanks

I do as Heyyou does, I have a folder "Programs" on a physically non system hard drive where I place everything. I also rename them, mbam-setup.exe becomes Malwarebytes V1.43 and so on. I do this with everything, this way I know what it is because some installers are just "setup.exe" and what version it is. I also keep the previous version for a few days so that I can always downgrade if a problem should pop up with the new version. Then about once a month I burn it off to a dvd, then when I visit my mother a copy of the folder goes with me on a usb drive so I can put it on her hard drive.
