Deleting some corrupted files...

I'm running Windows XP professional, and have been getting an error message that say a file is corrupted and unreadable and the message tells me to run chkdsk... I've done so both in Windows and during startup, but I still keep getting the error message...

chkdsk /f wouldn't run because "some other process is using the volume"... Tried turning stuff off, rebooting... no results.

The file [it's a .gif] is located in c:\documents and settings\*user*\local settings\temporary internet files\content.ie5, which is the *secret* folder with the .dat file which tracks your surfing habits...

It was *really* difficult (for me, that is) to get windows explorer to show me this folder that's spying on everyone. When, at last, I did get to see the folder, I found the .gif that was causing trouble and tried to delete it... "Cannot delete something.gif: Access denied" "Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use"...

I can change the file in any way... can't rename, cut, copy, make it read-only, hidden etc...

I tried turning off every process and application that would let itself be turned off, but couldn't delete the file... what's going on here? Is it impossible to delete corrupted files or something?

Good thing it's not some important file...

 

if you're running NTFS, have you checked the security properties of the gif? (take ownership of the gif if you can). Have you tried deleting all your temp files? (you probably have, just asking).

 

I'm not sure about XP, but with my computer I have to start up in safe mode (F8 at startup) to delete certain files. My computer had some apparently non-malicious viruses running that I could only delete in safe mode.
