Deleting Windows 7 After Installing Windows 10 As Well As Duplicate Files?

I like Win 10 so felt it was time to get rid of extra files (Win7). Problem is, I don't see windows.old file anywhere.

I downloaded and ran Duplicate Remover from MGs downloads. I finally realized it would take forever to delete 9,000 some files (and it wasn't finished scanning even) so I closed the program.

I'm not sure what to do. Is there a way to find windows.old, it must still be installed to have that many duplicates surely?? Maybe there's another reason to have that many.

Anyone up for helping me on this one?

all my laptop info is in my signature, thank you for any help;)

    Hi Max,

It's not listed. I checked that at least 2 times. I saw Win 10 installation Files, but nothing on Win7. I used "Search Everything" software also to see if I could find windows.old. I searched the whole C Drive.

I can only suspect that Windows may have deleted it itself once well past the 30 day window for winding back, though that's only an educated guess. I can't test it. Still, if it's gone there's nothing to worry about.

Check your recycle bin, it may well be hiding in there. 29GB

you need to click on the clean up system files and that should find the old windows files and delete them

It's in the recycle bin in all three of your screen shots on the right. Click a tick in that box then click on 'clean up system files'.
    Andy:
If you read all the posts you will seen that has already been suggested and done. The box that shows them just needs to be ticked.

I would have kept the Windows 7 just in case.Mainly due to the fact that not just me but others are having issues with the newer windows 10 update. And it might take Microsoft a while to fix them.

It's useless after 30 days. A system can't revert back to before Win 10.

Max: I do apologise I totally forgot that it was already mentioned. It was the first thing that popped in my head

I got rid of that update, my games weren't working right. I went back to the Version I got when I first loaded Windows 10 I guess about 2 months ago.

omg, I've been running the Duplicate Remover again and I am up to 5000 dupes already:eek:LOL! Have any of you ever had that many? I am trying to figure out how it's possible:confused: I maybe need to tick some more boxes?? LOL!! tic tic tic, good thing I can laugh so I don't cry;)

Ok, I can do this, making sure to follow those steps:

What do you think? At least I could get rid of duplicate photos, and documents, maybe some of my games are duplicated too.

I'm pretty confused about the info on the link from pcworld, specifically, parts about knowing "what files need to be in two places". Can anyone explain that to me? I just figure one file, in one place was the way of Windows, new to me that some have to be "cross-filed" I guess?

Also, can a filename be the same, but have different content?? Thanks you guys, this seems to be the hardest project I've tried to do on my computer, Denise

PS Here are 2 snips after using Duplicate Cleaner Free. I truly do not know what to do with all the dupes on some of these files as in the 2nd snip. It looks like I should have done this more regularly, duh:( I love learning but wish it wasn't always the hard way, lol!!

Sorry you guys, this is an unholy mess. I realized after posting that last info that I have 3 users, Denise, Abby Normal, and Admin. So 3 times the files basically. Problem for me will be to determine what I can delete safely.

I don't have a good understanding of why there has to be admin files, and why I can't just have one called Admin and forget the Denise & Abby files. I do know I struggled with getting alerts saying I had to have Admin permission and never took care of that. It would say, do I want to save to Abby Normal instead. What a mess:(

Ok, no shortcuts on some things I can see for myself so I'm going to run the Dupe Cleaner on just the users Denise/abbynormal. If someone could explain the admin folder to me, and if I need to keep it, that would help me a lot. I also want to fix this laptop so I don't have to keep getting messages that I need admin permissions. I will search on my own, be working on this today, all day, lol;)

    Thanks for any help:) Denise

Hi Denise - no answers I suspect because it's not really clear what you are trying to do. If you have by now satisfied yourself that windows.old has been deleted then we are left with your question about your duplicate files. What has caused you to focus on these? They are not normally looked at when cleaning up, with Disk Cleanup, CCleaner etc. Also, in relation to your other questions, it might help if you tell us exactly what user accounts you have in Control Panel and whether they are standard user accounts or administrator accounts.

I'm doing ok now just using Duplicate Cleaner Free. I am being careful, and basically re-doing my "crummy" filing system I've payed no attention to. I've been talking on here but really haven't known what to ask.

The one thing I would like to know is can I just have the "admin user", and that's it? I live alone, no one else uses my computer. Other than that I am figuring things out on my own. I've been unclear, again, because I haven't really known what to ask specifically.

If you are the only user then you don't need any other user accounts, but your account will have to be an Admin account. Maybe you were once advised on safety grounds not to use an Admin account on a daily basis? It's still sound advice that's honoured more in the breach than the observance ;)

Maybe I was but don't remember. Why is it good to have both an Admin and one user account?

I'm done asking questions here:) Thanks again to everyone. I'm going to keep my admin & one other user account. Keep it simple.

Also, I have gotten rid of only the duplicate pics, videos, and documents. I love Duplicate Cleaner Free on Majorgeeks by the way. It has so many ways to set up the searches, so many easy options. As a beginner-intermediate user, I recommend it as even I could figure it out;) Denise
