    I was planning to add a partition to my HD so I could have an alternate Linux (ubuntu) OS. I haven't done anything yet.

    When I examined the HD with Easeus Partition Master it shows three partitions:
    Partition Type Size Used Status Pri/Log
    * FAT16 47MB 7MB None Primary
    C: NTFS 108GB 54GB System Primary
    * FAT32 4GB GMB None Primary

    I understand the NTFS, but why are there FAT16, and FAT32 segments? Are these actual partitions? Can they be removed? Neither of the FAT segments amount to much space, I just would like to know why they are there.

    I just looked at my Dell 531 desktop and there is a similarly sized FAT16 segment, but no FAT32.

    A lot of pre-made, name brand computers have a recovery partition so you can restore the computer to how it originally came if you had an issue that forced you to reinstall your OS.
