I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong sub-forum. I believe my malware is gone, but I am having trouble dealing w/ the after effects.

I have a Dell B120 laptop w/ Celeron 1.40 GHZ & 1 gig RAM that was running Windows XP home. I was using Avast free edition, automatic updates, and the firewall on my Belkin router. A few weeks ago, websites started redirecting to advertising sites, I could start programs, but then lost control of them, and a window for a bogus antivirus program would appear.

Stupidly, I did not save the logfile because I thought I could just reformat the hard drive and reinstall XP & my software. I did not have any important files on that computer, so I didn't have a full backup or recovery disk.
I changed the boot drive, and started XP from the disk in order to reformat, but after a couple minutes, the Blue Screen of Death would appear. After that, it wouldn't boot XP at all.

Out of desperation, I downloaded Ubuntu and was able to reformat the drive and install it. I thought after that I could install XP again and use it as a dual-boot system. However, if I try to install XP again, it goes to the blue screen.

My next thought was to flash the BIOS, but the ones available from Dell are for Windows.

Ubuntu is running fine, but I really needed XP for a few windows applications that do not have a linux equivalent.

yeah, I don't have a compact flash adapter like that article refers to. I forgot to mention that, when booting from CD, it appears like the Windows XP is going to install. At the bottom of the screen I see "setup is loading files" and lists several drivers one at a time over a span of about 60-90 seconds, but when it gets to "setup is starting Windows", that's when the BSOD appears.

I'm so lost... but thank you for trying to help.

I have recently had a similar issue, was there any resolve?
