Dell E1505 Bootup Screen Goes Dark

On cold start, the BIOS splash screen appears for 1-2 seconds and then the screen goes dark.

On the splash screen, "DELL" is blue and everything else is red.

The laptop boots normally when I use an external monitor, but of course I cannot see the BIOS splash screen.

Any thoughts?

Your video output is set to VGA only. You can normally change the function of VGA port between VGA only, Laptop screen only and both. It is normally done by holding down th Fn Key and pressing one of the F keys (The key combination varys between laptops but the correct key should have a picture of a computer screen in the same colour as the Fn key)
