Although I have read about this particular problem before I do not seem to be able to repair it. This particular BSOD is "STOP 0x0000007b (0xF78E1524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) inaccessible boot device". I am lead to believe that I should reinstall the drivers and/or firmware for the SATA controllers!! However I cannot access the HDD so I appear to be stuck. Can anyone suggest a way round this dilemma.

    Thanks Jackets1952

I recommend going into the BIOS (usually by pressing the del key during the boot screen) and changing the SATA operation to ATA mode.

If you don't want to do that, you will need to install the SATA driver, but I'm not quite sure how you would go about doing that.

Thanks for your input, however, being a Dell it is SATA as standard in BIOS and the only other setting is Auto (which locks comp up altogether). I have tried factory defaults in BIOS and taking the button battery out for 30 secs, both to no avail. I can see the drive if I boot computer up in Ubuntu 10.4 live CD, being a different O/S it will not load windows drivers. I am at a loss as what to do next. Is the system junk or would a new motherboard salvage anything?

Have you emailed Dell tech support asking how to load the SATA drivers to get the hard drive recognized?

Sent an Email to Dell!! had no reply. However when I type in Dell Service Tag no I get a screen saying warrenty has expired and to phone a number that will charge £19 before they fix the comp. If replacing the motherboard is a fix it will cost my collegue the mobo price and not Dell,s £19 phone call as well

Can you access a recovery partition, F11 on boot up I believe. :wave

There is now no recovery partition on the machine, it has been converted to a backup directory which is of no use now because the info is over 3 years old

    Thanks jackets1952

Do you have install or recovery disks? Can you get your hands on an install disk?

I have my copy of Windows XP Pro, similar to the o/s on the Dell machine and I also have his 25 digit code. I have not tried a reinstallation with the F6 for additional drivers key as I am not sure how to go about it.

Similar to the OS? I hope it is the same and not home or media.

If you boot from that, making the necessary BIOS selection, can you attempt a repair?

Did you try the SFC? Safe/diagnostic modes? :)-o You have to enter diagnostic mode with MSconfig, which you would be able to access if you can get into safe mode).

I cannot install a copy of Windows 7 let alone a copy of Windows XP Pro as the motherboard will not communicate with the HDD at all, all we get is a BSOD showing stop 0x0000007B etc etc which, according to the Dell website indicates a problem with the sata controller and/or drivers. Hence me asking if another mobo would fix the problem. The only way I can see the HDD at the moment ids to run a copy of Ubuntu 10.4 live on a CD, I cannot install that on a new HDD on that machine.

Thanks all of you for your suggestions, jackets1952

:confused I don't understand why you brought WIN 7??
But if you can boot from a Ubuntu CD, why can't you boot from the XP Pro CD, follow the menus, select reapir? :wave:wave

Copy of Win 7 is my own, Live CD of Ubuntu uses it's own drivers therefore does not need to access the hard drive on boot up. So that should mean it is a sata drivers problem.
