    Hi World,

    The scenario,

    Dell G1
    P-400
    128mb ram
    4.3gb HDD
    4.1 cmedia sound card
    realtek nic
Bios flash to version A10 from A06
    Operating system - Win98SE
Double cd rom drive bay variant.

Had a a single drive bay version of the same type of unit G1 but with a celeron 333 in it.

    Imaged the g1 / 333 onto the g1 / 400 expecting some minor tweaks..ha..now the fun begins.

After several restarts for new components the last was with the "video" & a "generic failsafe plug n play bios" in the device manager also dont recall seeing the u.s.b device hub there either, come to think of it..anyway...had a look in the Bios no option there, at least that i could see to enable a pnp o/s like other bios's have...k.. fine

After getting the cd to recognise I was able to get the rest of the device manager sorted mainly the generic bios update..(and usbs still not there yet)... as a lot of things were updated and installed / recognised.

After the traditional restart the unit then tries to install a generic pci device neither of the two units the master C333 or the cloned to P400 G1's have this.
Another thing is that I am unable to set the do not restart when the display is changed, when i first finished the clone and realised there were issues i did a msconfig and noted that the startup type was selective...hmmm changed to normal and had some joy from that point on..the p400 (clone) found an ATI wonder vga and installed this but there is also now the second pci device that keeps appearing on this unit.

There are two user accounts on this p.c and a frustrated geek I'm not sure if that has any concern regarding this issue. I have started in safe mode and removed the former pci generic and it still comes back....oh the other thing couldnt change whom the unit was registered to like the windows but could change the cd key...using magical jellybean.

Please help this is frustrating :cry:confused remove it it comes back remove it comes back remove it from both accounts comes back:p do the same in safe mode comes back:p..other than this annoying issue and the usb which i havent investigated yet things are fine or seem to be...

I'll try clearing the cmos and see if that helps might be some residual from the flash in there?..if I dont post back within 10mins then this issue still stands.

Thanks in advance my fellow geekers:cool

The drivers for your system (an OptiPlex G1 I assume) can be downloaded from this link. The ATI video driver should fix the video issue you mentioned. As for the USB: I didn't see the chipset drivers listed at the link I just posted, but they may be listed in one of the sub-menus under System Utilities or IDE controllers or something. I think the chipset drivers will solve the USB issues. Since Windows Update is no longer supported for W98, the USB drivers might be tricky if you cannot find the chipset drivers. If all else fails, attach an Everest report to a future post and we'll try to link you up with the USB and/or chipset drivers.
    Good luck!

Hi dlb, thanks yet again for the assist. I got the drivers from the ati site late last night and they dont isntall or change the scenario, windows wants to install an ATI VGA Wonder card, I'm not overly familar with all the ALL IN Wonder cards that Ati have produced but this is a far as i got.

The Ati drivers from the offical dell site are required to be installed from two floppies created from the download. Another identicle unit use these drivers fine, the main difference is that i ran out of ideas yesterday and updated the bios to A10 from A06, however the drivers still seem to install just dont stick on restart, and still have the issue of not being able to set the do not restart on change display settings option. yes i can select it but nothing happens and the system still wants to restart..good lord.

Another very similar unit to the one having issues, similar apart from the bios that is, has seemingly the same ati drivers and works just fine... I think I'l build this one up and image over the top of the one that has issues...a big thanks to all the geeks that invented imaging software. Time was up for this task as of yesterday, so thought i'd post and see if this issue tweaked someones memory of similar issue... But thankyou very much indeed for your efforts and for the past assists. have an awesome day.:cool:L8r:wave

Oh..by the way I used a usb patch for 98 that gets it reading flash drives etc, and there are still msupdates for things like I.E 6 and sp1 for 98 and several others mostly language filess - about 40 or so, there is also the media player 9 update and directX 9.0c for 98 which you could probably find on any old magazine cd anyways. But thats about it really. l8r;)
