I am configuring an old Dell GX60 for a friend of mine. It was an office computer and apparently has NO sound card(?!?!) (doesn't have a network card or modem either). The computer has the input/output sound ports on the back and when you open the case they all go directly to the motherboard, so I assumed it had a built-in sound device. However, when you go to Control Panel/Sound and Audio (or whatever) it says there are no audio devices installed. It also has the network connection on the back, but when I try to hook it up directly to my network with the cable, it won't connect. Says it has no network card.
Anyway, I had to do a complete re-install of XP Pro. The old system was password protected, etc., so I just wiped it and installed a fresh copy. Everything seems to work OK, just no sound and no way (yet) to access the internet. I did install a working modem (Conexant chipset) and its driver, but the driver software wouldn't run--that was weird. The hourglass would come on then go off without the installation package coming up. Eh? In any case I've got an external modem I'll hook up as soon as I get the USB cable for it. Right now I'd just like to get some noise out of it!

Hmm did you try right clicking your "my computer" icon on your desktop, choosing "properties", going to the "hardware" tab, clicking the "device manager" button, and than clicking the small icon that scans for all new hardware in the window that opens up?

If it has sound jacks on the back, and an ethernet port on the back, then those devices are physically present, but they may be disabled in the BIOS. Right when first power on and the big blue Dell logo comes up, press the F2 key. This will get you in to the BIOS setup. Poke around until you find the sound/audio adapter and the ethernet/LAN adapet and set them to enabled. Then use these links to download/install the drivers:
Chipset http://support.dell.com/support/dow...-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=27&fileid=48256 (install this first and reboot)
    Audio http://support.dell.com/support/dow...=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=92933
    Ethernet http://support.dell.com/support/dow...=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=5&fileid=67420

NOTE: the GX60 was marketed with one of two different ethernet adapters: a 3Com which WindowsXP will pre-install, and an Intel adapter which I linked to above.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

I had looked in the BIOS on boot-up and under Integrated Devices it says "Sound On" and "Network Interface Controller On."
I did try hardware and devices and properties. It gave me the yellow question marks for both the audio and ethernet controllers.
Anyway, I'm did the chipset and audio drivers and they worked! Many thanks! That's progress. The ethernet controller installed, however the ethernet card remains under a yellow question mark in the Devices display. Any thoughts on that? Plus, just to change the subject, any thoughts on how I can get a modem driver that will install? I have a Conexant RD01-D850 that was working fine in the computer I pulled it out of.

Never mind! I (gasp) read and followed the instructions for the network driver installation (instead of just running the setup.exe and hoping) and it worked. Amazing. Then I followed the same instructions, substituting the modem driver I had previously downloaded for the network driver and it worked too. So the computer is ready to go. Everything works. Muchisimas gracias.
