Dell Inspiration 6000 won't boot

My father's Dell Inspiration 6000 was working fine yesterday but when I tried to start it today it won't boot at all. It has three lights that come on momentarily but then it shuts down. I bought a new AC Adapter hoping that was the problem with the same result. When it was working the battery would only charge to 6%, so I removed the battery, same result. Yesterday I reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2 then I put Office XP, avast home edition, adaware annivesary edition, spyware doctor and PC Doc pro 4.2 but those are the same programs I have on my computers.

I have no idea what happened...HELP!!!:cry

I also removed the HDD just to check it out with the same results...

A shut down is usually heat related. Since this is a laptop, it is harder to "see" the problem.
Possibilities: the thermal paste between the CPU and the heat sink may be dried up, a fan may not be turning on, the AC adapter you bought, if an after market rather than a Dell might not be the proper one for the notebook or maybe the connector on the notebook between the AC adapter and the motherboard is bad.

When I start it the first time the power light blinks and then turns off. And when I try and start it again the three left keys (numbers lock, caps lock, scroll lock) along with the power light stay on for a few seconds. I don't know what this means but I will take a look at your suggestions.

Hi Rand,

The LEDs are tested by the system during boot so, flash momentarily. All they prove at that point is that the comp is in the boot process and the LEDs are working.
