I did a factory reset on my Dell Inspiron 9400 and now there is no sound from the speakers - tho' there is via the headphones. I have tried updating all the drivers and fiddling around with the socket. No joy. In the Sounds and Devices window there are various volume sliders, all set to zero. When I slide these up and press apply, they scoot back down to zero.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the hardware?

Can you change the volume sliders when headphones are plugged in?

    What OS are you using?
