The replacement battery that was plugged in about 9 months ago has been working fine. However, just recently, while the laptop was on, and the battery was 100%, the power cord was pulled and the laptop went completely down. Pressing the power button had no affect. The laptop would not fire up with the 100% battery. When the power cord is reattached, the laptop does fire up. Why is the laptop not recognizing the battery - it is properly connected.

Have you cleaned the batteries connection, most are copper and do loose some connection quality over time.

OK, here's a shot from way out in left field. The following solved a weird USB problem on a laptop, and it's so easy to do, you might as well give it a go (if Oldphil's suggestion doesn't work):

    0. Shut down the computer
    1. Remove the power plug
    2. Remove the battery
    3. Press the ON button and hold it for 30 seconds.
    4. Put the battery back in.
    5. Connect the power
    6. Start the computer.

    You just never know!
