I have a Dell inspiron 3800 laptop that has a wierd glitch. When I move the cursor around, it will randomly click on whatever it is pointing at without me clicking. It doesn't do it all the time, but when it does do it, it can be real annoying. I am not too sharp with computors, but I am willing to learn. Any ideas?

are you using a touchpad to move the pointer around? if so, its most likely clicking when you remove your finger and place it back on the touchpad really quickly.... that reason alone is why i hate touchpads.

I am not sure if you can disabe the touchpad clicking options, but if you could, it should be in your Control Panel under some kind of touchpad settings.

Maybe someone else who knows laptops better can further assist you

good luck, and welcome to MajorGeeks ;)

Yea, it has a touch pad. I can't find any settings though.

on my dell laptop there's an icon in my taskbar at the bottom right of the screen for the touchpad (looks like an oval - you're might be different) just double click on it then click on the device settings and you can tweak the settings or disable it. i rarely use my touchpad for the very reason you metioned. good luck! ;)

I hate touchpads to. They come in handy when you dont have room to use a mouse though.

Try going here:Start menu, Control Panel, then there should be a Mouse or Pointing device icon. You should be able to change some of the properties around.

I don't have a Dell but on my laptop you can change the tap speed for opening things. If all else fails uninstall and reinstall the touchpad drivers.

It sounds like you have tapping enabled. I don't have my laptop with me right now, but if I remember correctly there is a button for enabling/disabling tapping in the touchpad settings.

I played around with double click settings and no luck. This will sound dumb but how do I access touchpad settings? All I can find is mouse settings. Is this the same?

On mine the touchpad settings are reached from an icon in the taskbar. The settings in control panel should give you access to the tapping switch. If not, ask Dell on their help line. If you have a few hours

Now I remember. I got Dell to send me a disk with the touchpad drivers, so I could get rid of that damn tapping. You might have to do the same.

How about this glitch I have.. It seems to happen on SP2 however not sure what exactly I am doing that could be queing the glitch.. Every so often, I will lose the ability to click (finger not on touchpad) and I ahve to press cntl alt del to get the functino back. Then after I get it back, it seems the right click menu shows up on left click. Now.. It is happening after a pause. Anyone ever hear of this? I have a latitude c640. Thanks!! This has been bugging me for months upon months!! Any info would be sooooooo appreciated!!

Go to Dell.com, locate the downloads for your PC, download the touchpad driver there, probably called a "Synaptics touch pad." It will be an exe file, which you will then run from your hard drive. Once installed, you will have a new icon in your lower right tray. Right-click on it, choose "mouse properties" and you will be able to disable the "tapping" feature. Until you install this driver, you have no control over the touchpad sensitivity, etc.

Thanks for the info however I have tried that, it's not a sensitivity issue. Its basically a glitch that once it happens I have to restart to get rid of the issue, right click menu showing up on left click. I appreciate the info!
