dell latitude c540/640 wont turn on......

Hey guys I had a dell latitude 540/640 which someone dropped and the hinges broke but before that i was using it and it needed a new battery and cmos battery. I replaced both of them and it ran fine. Once it broke I found another one from my grandfather which the main battery and cmos needed to be replaced. Now i have my old broken one and one that works fine.

Since I just replaced both batteries on the broken one I swapped them over to the newer one and now I get nothing. No lights, no screen, nothing. I did some research and they said the cmos might be bad but I just changed it its only about 2 months old and so is the main battery. I hook the charger up and it doesnt recognize the battery but works this way.

Not to sure why the comp isnt coming on now. If i put the old battery back in it works but dies very quick due to the battery has lost its ability to take a charge.

The "new" battery off your grandfather's machine may be defective. I'm guessing this based on the assumptions that...

• The PC turns on (even briefly) with the other battery installed, and
• The PC operates normally if connected to AC power.

If you have to break down and buy a rechargable battery, don't get ripped off on an OEM one from Dell. Search eBay for a United States seller with a high amount of Positive Feedback and a decent return policy if the battery doesn't work (Avoid sellers who ship from Hong Kong or China: It will take up to 4 weeks to receive the item and will cost a fortune in postage if you have to return it). Decent aftermarket batteries from top-rated eBay sellers are usually about one-third of the cost compared to the manufacturer's OEM battery,
