Dell Latitude C640/cdrw not recognized

Hi,

I have a dell latitude C640 laptop, running windows xp, w/ a matshita ujda360 cdrw drive. The laptop doesnt recognize the drive when I open up my computer. I tried to run the "d:" drive and it still doesnt work.

I then followed the troubleshooting instructions on uninstall/reinstall the device, but after i did that i got this message under device status: "windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (code 19)

The other problem is that I cannont do any updates on the laptop until i connect to the internet, and I just bought a wireless card for the laptop, which cannot be installed unless I have the cd drive working properly.

I'm really frustrated and confused and would kindly appreciate any help.

if the problem is recent,
do a system restore, back to before the problem occurred.

 

System Restore won't work if it's a corrupt Registry entry, which is what I suspect this is. (And going by the error code 19)

Before you attempt the following make a backup of the Registry first. Then,

Go to Start, Run and type in regedit then O.K.

Locate the "UpperFilters" value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and delete it.

Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and delete it.

Close the Registry Editor and reboot.

You may have to reinstall some burning applications if they no longer work after this.

Post back with the results.

I didn't have it available, nor did I get it from Micr$$oft but regardless, what difference does it make?

I included all the relevant information, so what benefit was there for you to post it again?

 

holy crap, something so frustrating relieved by something so simple. I didnt have the upperfilters, but the lowerfilters were there, and i deleted it, and now it works. you are da man!!!
