(I'm sorry for double postings) Case of NumbSkull syndrom. I hope I am posting in the right place. I recently bought a used Dell Latitude XT. The biggest issue is the service tag sticker was removed before I purchased it ( I didnt know this). When I try to boot up I get flashing lights at F4,F5, and the Cap Lock buttons. This will stay flashing with the fan shutting off after about 2 minutes. After the fan is off and I leave the unit plugged in and with the battery installed the lights will turn to solidly lit after about 2o-25 minutes. I can not access the Bios F2 or any other of the F buttons. This unit was orgianly sold with the Vista OS system. The seller installed Windows 7 Professional on it. I have tried unsuccessfully to get help from Dell. With out Service Tag Number they give me a line of *stuffing* that they cant help me without that number. I also asked if I had to replace the MOBO what would be the best to swap out. Again no Service Tag number no help.. Please I need a Computer Brainiacs help here. I am out $300.00 and really need to get this unit up and running. Thank you. Stuart

Been there done that. Its not the solution. Changing wires didnt help and reseating the memroy cards didnt help.

OK...did you try running the PC with just one stick in a socket? Don't know how many sticks/sockets you have, but you could have a bad socket.

I would try a separate boot using each of my sticks in one socket, then move on to the next socket and kind of take notes as I go. If it starts with one stick in one socket, you could just leave it there and add another (or the other...whichever applies) stick to another (or the other...whichever applies) socket...

It only has one 4G memory card in it. I have reseated it over and over and I am still getting flashing Blue lights. I just removed the 4G memory card and tried to reboot and same thing is happening.

Stewyscrewy the Dell diagnostic code for the CAP lock light solid is for Storage device error.
    1. Reseat the hard drive and optical drive.
    2. Test the computer with just the hard drive and just the optical drive.
    3. Replace the device that is causing the failure.
    4. Replace the system board.

I also tried removing the Hard Drive and booting up with and with out the memory card installed. I am still getting the Flashing lights over F4,F5 and the Cap Lock Buttons. My WLAN Card has 3 plugs on it with Black,Grey,White wires plugged in, with the Black/White stripe, and the White/Grey stripe have plastic caps over the ends.

Ok Here is where everyone misses what I type. The Cap Lock button with the other F4,F5, buttons FLASHES while trying to Boot up. Then after the fan shuts off adn a period of 20-25 minutes then the lights all go solid if I leave the plug in or the battery seated.

Ok Please help me I am not a computer wiz, How do I check the optical drive? I have the base station with the optical drive and I havent put the 2 together, I am running right off the battery for all my testing. If I have to get a new Mo Bo which one would be the best one.

http://help.lockergnome.com/general/Dell-Latitude-Laptop-Won-39-Boot--ftopict28842.html Here is what I found this evening and I have tried evry bit of this. Still wont change my light pattern and no Boot up. everyone they are also saying it is the Memory something or other is the culprit. Please chime in if you know what it might be. Otherwise it will be changing out the MoBo and that most likely isnt the answer. I want to thank everyone who has posted helps so far. So Thank you from me sincerely to you folks

    stewyscrewy...

You might consider taking it by a tech shop (call first to see if he has what you need) and have him test a compatible memory module for the laptop. You could call around and see if you can find one with one of the modules, then explain to him your situation. I think you might be able to find one to do it for 20 or 30$.

It would be nice to find out it's only the memory module, and who knows what else you might find out about it. Could be something else that's inexpensive to repair. And computer shop owners are after all just like the rest of us...they love to solve PC problems...:-D
