    What's up guys,

I have a problem with a Dell Optiplex GX240, it does not boot up from the CD that I am trying to format with. Well to start with this is what it says when it is turned on:

It says "Strike F1 to retry to reboot, F2 for setup utility"

When I check the setup utility, and the boot sequence it shows that the CD-ROM is not installed.

I checked the cables and they are all connected properly, it was working before. Does anybody know to make it boot from the CD or install the CD ROM.

    Thank you.

In your 3rd screen shot, it shows all other channels (besides Primary Drive 0) set to "OFF". If your CD is on Secondary Drive 0, you have to change it from "OFF" to "CDROM", or possibly "AUTO", and the jumper on the CD drive must be set to Master. I haven't been in an old Dell BIOS in a while, so I don't know if there's a setting for "AUTO", but I do know that right now you have it turned off, and it must be changed. If this doesn't work, then there's a chance the CDROM is dead, or not getting power. If you can open/close it by pushing the button, then it's getting power....

Also, it looks like the BIOS has been reset or the CMOS battery is dead; it shows a date of Dec 10 2001 and the time as being 00:21:24. You can buy a new battery at any PC store or Radio Shack. Ask for a CR2032 (or just say "a computer CMOS battery"). It shouldn't be more than $3-$4.

Yea I reset it, I remove the green jumper to reset the BIOS. Thank you, I will try that but I am sure i try that before and when I turned on the computer it shows that the CD ROM is not installed. I will post up a picture as soon as I can.

    Don't give up-
The problems you are experiencing are typical of cmos flat battery.
I will try to see if iy's an easy one to change
2001 IS THE DATE THAT GIVES YOU THE CLUE- SOON IT WILL NOT BOOT UP, as it goes completely
I have had this problem may times, and windows will not install, as the date stops it, and when the cmos battery is that flat, it will start, and then stop loading, as the cmos gets lower.
I f yours is the desktop- iys an easy change , only 3.3 volt small battery-
If as Its a laptop, as by re-reading, I believe it is,its a matter of whether, or, not, the cmos battery is a plug in type, or, soldered- if it's soldered , you need a repairer to replace it.

The cmos battery is coin size, usually 3.3 v and onlty a couple of quid.
