    ok i got a inspiron 8100 that does not want to go into standby, i installed all the drivers from dell and updates everything but stand by is grayed out and key "fm" and esc "standby" does not work. what i did notice is that when windows is loading is i click on shutdown standby is there and i can click on it, but if i wait until its fully loaded it goes gray and can't get it to work, something is loading that is disabling standby what do you guys think, any opinion would be great. i talked to dell support they are no help.

    Did you check properties? Right click desktop / properties / screen saver /power .....standby ...:)

    Sorry Tim I just checked that and all that gives is the time to standby, I would wonder if you have your config system Diagnostic start-up instead of normal, I did a quick check for Standby in services and could not find it, but will keep checking, let us know how it goes languy

    sorry i don't have that option, when i go to power options all i have under the advances is what it should do when i close the lid and the options are hibernate or nothing.

    nothing in power options ether. also nothing in the dell thing worked sorry.
    i also check to make sure i was starting in normal mode, i think its something that is starting up that is disabling standby, i will include a hijackthis log.

    Just a shot in the dark check in "Event Viewer" in System Tools if something is limiting this option it should show up there, checked MS and found nothing yet on Standby Option "Greyed out"

    Did you try this link and delete questionable items via HiJack This I noticed you have a different config in 016 files, remember you can replace any item deleted with HiJack in its back-up file. Sorry that we have not been able to pin it down for you, frustrating I know:mad: but just keep posting and someone will have the solution

    1) Click the "Start" button in the bottom left hand corner of the screen.

    2) Select the |"Control Panel"

    3) Click the "System" icon within the "Performance and Maintenenace " section

    4) Select the "Advanced" tab across the top

    5) Click "Settings" within the "Performance" section

    6) Select the "Advanced" tab

    7) Near the bottom there is a "Change" button, click this

    8) Within the "Virtual memory" section there is a button "System managed size"

    9) Click this and then the "OK" -- 3 times, to exit the settings. Restart your machine

    Did you install a newer version display driver?You might try and "rollback" that back if you did.

    Just so I'm clear ....in the link that I posted, at the bottom regarding setting up standby as an option when you close the lid ....is that what's going on ...is it set to standby when you close the lid????

  19. languy99

    languy99 Corporal

    i rolled back driver and went to the newest drivers and that didn't work.

    i can't set it to do anything when i close the lid. under power options/advanced under the drop down menu the only option is to do nothing.

    This is as far as I have gotten and maybe others can help from here. The standby option is located here HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENT CONTROL\SERVICES\ACPI\PARAMETERS then the above but below parameters is WAKEUP I have enclosed one snaps if that helps, found programs to disable Standby but nothing so far to enable

    As I mention earlier this is a program to disable Standby, so I would type what I have in Notepad and add it to your registry using the program below as an example of how to compose it

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ACPI\Parameters]
    "AMLIMaxCTObjs"=hex:04,00,00,00
    "Attributes"=dword:00000070

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ACPI\Parameters\WakeUp]
    "FixedEventMask"=hex:20,05
    "FixedEventStatus"=hex:00,84
    "GenericEventMask"=hex:18,50,00,10
    "GenericEventStatus"=hex:10,00,ff,00

    I have enclosed the snap of the second part of my standby posting in the registry under the wakeup part. Good Luck Languy and hope this is your cure.

    I saw in your Malware post that you have your power setting on "presentation", when I switched mine from "Home/Desktop" to presentation, it turned off my standby option, however it did not "Grey" out that button on turn off computer, just a thought............Was sure that chaslang had it beat, hang in there languy99, I'm going to remember this one for awhile I know

    yup chaslang gave me a patch for the registry and it didn't work, the patch took and everything but it did not do anything. i was thinking about removing the ACPI and have windows re-detect it what do you think?

    does not work sorry, i made sure all of the modem and video drivers are right and they are and still nothing works, something is turning off standby, and it loads. maybe i should download ewido and do a trojan scan what do you think?

    This is from the link I posted. Did you install all the suggested updates from Dell......did you leave anything off? And, just a thought. Maybe the updated versions of something is causing the problem, maybe let windows choose and see if that makes a difference.

    I patched the BIOS from A06 to A07
    I patched the video BIOS to the latest version from Dell
    I installed the s-seven-m v6218 video driver using the proceedure he recommends (including going to VGA mode)
    I installed the latest Dell chipset drivers
    I installed the Intel Application Accellerator
    I installed Adobe reader

    i also tried uninstalling the drivers for all the acpi i have, i have four acpi lid, acpi power button, acpi sleep button and acpi thermal zone, rebooted into windows and it reinstalled the hardware, but the same thing happened, is there any program i can install or some way to record everything that starts and have it give me a list, then we can analyse from there?

    Click on Start > Run > and type MSCONFIG in the "Open" box and then click the Startup tab.

    You can also use Startup Inspector for Windows here, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4075

    You might try disabling your anti-virus and firewall, see if that makes a difference.

    well mess with the network settings did not do anything, also shutting off startup items did not do anything so it has to be system services. i will download that program and see what i find. disabling firewall and virus software did not do anything.

    i had an idea last night, what if its an incompatible driver that would really mess with standby, is there any programs to see what drivers are running and with what they are associated?

  38. languy99

    i gave up reformatted and reinstalled now its working fine, i am slowly reinstalling the driver and constantly checking to see if anything disables standby, so far so good.

    Keep us informed languy99, that one really stumped me, would like to know the cure, still figure it had to be something changed in the registry tah we all missed. Sorry you had to reformat and install, thats always a bummer to do.:) :D

    well last night i finished reinstalling windows, i installed all the drivers and reinstalled SP2 and all of the updates and standby is working fine. who knows what happened but now its working fine and i am in the process of reinstalling all of my programs. i do have one question i am looking for a media player that can replace quick time and real player, i don't like those because they install too much crap what do you guys recommend? also i want one that can play dvds too so something that includes all of the codecs

    These are very clear directions. I'm looking for such clear directions about how to reformat XP Professional. And on reinstalling, what order of disks, and what choices to select (I think there were lots of these within the sound card, but I'm not sure.)

  43. languy99

    languy99 Corporal

    nope, i had no 3d screen saveer running, i personally think it was a driver or a service that was turning it off, because as windows was loading standby was fine, but once it finished loading it got turned off.

    NAS,

    I have included a link below that might help you some. If I were you, I would start a new thread and list the specifics of things I wanted/needed to know.

    Just try and include the answers to these questions.

    1. What kind of computer do you have, did it come with XP Pro preinstalled?

    2. Do you have an original XP Pro CD, or is it an Upgrade CD? You could even have Recovery CD's. It's important to know which CD's you have.

    You will get more help starting the new thread, alot of members will not even see it here and they may have better info than me. Plus, if anything goes wrong or you have additional questions you have your own thread to ask.

    Here is just one link, just scroll down to the list, http://www.windowsxpprofessional.wi...l (Pro) CD INSTALL, REINSTALL & REPAIR GUIDES

    Good luck,

    Steve
