dell wont recognize cd drives???

ok, so ive been trying to work on my buddys dell inspiron 2400...it wont recognize the cd drives...well, it finds them, but says the driver is missing or corrupted...ive tried downloading drivers and everything, but i still cant get them working...ive checked to make sure the drives are physically set up right and have power and all, but it still wont install them correctly....anybody have any suggestions cuz its starting to piss me off...

 

Go to device manager and uninstall the drivers for the drives, restart, windows should find new hardware and reinstall the drivers. ed

You shouldn't need a driver for a CD/DVD drive. Most driver downloads you find for these devices are actually firmware updates.

It is quite possible that your CD drive is malfunctioning. You may want to run a system file check (sfc /scannow) to make sure no system files are corrupted and causing the issue, but if you have a known-good CD drive to try, that would be the way I'd go.

More like its a very well known software issue.

Note: Following this procedure breaks any third party burning software, meaning you gotta reinstall it.
