Alright I have a Dell XPS M1530 with a TEAC DVD+-RW DVW28SLC ATA Device (Device manager) and after a format, it will not accept DVD's. It just spits them right back out after spinning for a few moments. It will accept BLANK dvd's and cd's but if I were to insert a BURNED dvd it will read it as a blank, no matter if it is Finalized or not. I was thinking perhaps its a region issue (being that I am deployed to Iraq) but it doesnt work with either US dvd's or Iraqi dvd's. Currently I am in the United States Region.

I know there might be something to do with my Upper and Lower filters, but i thought that was only for burning, i could be wrong.

There are NO drivers listed for my dvd drive so that isn't a problem, unless I am missing something. I downloaded the only thing on DELL.com that said DVD Drive under downloads for my laptop, but it was for a different model drive.

If anyone can assist me, it'd be great to watch the DVD's family sent me from home. Thank you guys.

    Anyone?

I love how my issues never get looked at on ANY troubleshooting forum.

    :confused

I had a similar problem on my laptop. Here is a link to a regestry fix. Had to do this with my computer too:

    http://www.randomfix.com/2007/04/12/windows-vista-–-missing-cddvd-rom-drive/

Basic steps from that page (in case that page disappears somehow):
    UPDATE

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11*CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Apparently it seems that this is an age old fix for even XP systems. If you venture to the registry key above by doing the following steps:

    1. Click on the start menu.
    2. If this is a Vista machine in the search box type in “regedit” without the quotation marks.
    3. Maximize the HKLM and then go ahead and browse until you reach the key listed above.
    4. In the right panel you’ll see something along the lines of “UpperFilter” and “LowerFilter” you want to click on each “filter” key and hit delete. Click yes when it asks to confirm if you wish to delete the key.
    5. Restart Windows.
    6. Let me know if this works.

Gotta love Vista, cause Linux is so much more stable :p

Wish I could say the same, I ended up just getting an external.
A note I would like to add to people with the same issue: IF you are in the armed forces or have friends who are, do NOT use any of the Bootlegged DVD's they get from the Iraqi's or Afghani's as they are responsible for the mysterious destruction of almost my whole companies DVD drives being destroyed during our deployment. Something in the dvd's causes them to be the only dvd's allowed to play in the drive. After countless low level formats, different OS's, trying different CD's/DVD's, deleting upper/lower filters, taking apart my laptop etc.... I have concluded that there is no way to fix problems that have arisen from these DVD's.

    Thanks.

jamescook1989, please accept my apologies that your thread was not looked at promptly, or even at all.

Even though I was (probably) not active on here at the time of your thread starting, I can still apologise.

As for a fix, other than the external hard drive you have, the only other solution would be a replacement internal drive.

    Apologies again.
