Dell xps m1530 will not boot

Dell xps m1530 laptop running Windows 8.
When start switch is turned on Dell icon appears,progression bar moves across fairly quick but stops about 25 mm from the end and then moves slowly in small jumps to the end where the boot seems to stop.The screen is back lit with flashing curser on top left corner.Follow are 2 tests I have done.
Hold FN key down ,turn on power switch.Result as above.
Hold M key down,turn on power.Result colours red,green,blue,grey,black,full screen repeating.
With power off and press button to the left of power Dell Media Direct Intel appears.
Battery and mains power adapter OK.I installed win 8 about 3 months ago and computer has run without any problem.

 

My first guess is a bad hard drive since the PC will not start to the Windows 8 splash screen.

If your PC has a diagnostics option in the boot menu, run the hard drive tests (note: these will usually - but not always - flag a hard drive issue). You can also try booting the PC from a rescue or or repair CD/DVD - if it boots using the CD/DVD, it again points to a hard drive failure.

If you cannot do either of these, I'd try a new hard drive and reinstalling Windows 8 on it.

Thanks for your reply. Have purchased a new hdd but unfortunately still will not boot.Other enquiries I've made indicate it could be graphics which would need motherboard replacement.As the computer is 6 yrs old I will probably scrap it.

Do you have win 8 disk ? You could try repair process :wave

Thanks for your suggestion but I can't get past Dell Splash Screen with F2 or F12.I now have a ram reseat problem.My daughter has offered me an unwanted XPS so have decided to scrap mine.
