    Hi

After q computer crash due to a virus I had to get a new windows XP software. Since then there is no sound. I have large external analogue speakers connected through an old ONKYO amplifier. On the previous Windows all was running fine and the sound was great. I came to the conclusion it might be a windows rather than a motherboard problem for this reason.

I tried all the driver updates and downloads from the Dell web site and still can't get any sound. I have attached the Everest report and hope I may get some insight and help as it has become a matter of urgency to have my sound restored.

    Grateful for any help
    Thanks in advance
    Maureen

    Hi there Falconattack

I already have all of those drivers installed. It would not install the soundblaster patches because there is no soundblaster card on the computer. The internal sound card is Soundmax. Have already installed any updated drivers for this also. The Analogue driver I installed in March already so this had been going on for a long time now. It is not a Windows media problem because there are a couple of other players and it's the same result with all of them.

Tried to get the Microsoft fixit to look for the problem but as I am not running Internet Explorer it won't let me do that. I run Firefox and Safari and really don't want Internet Explorer if I can avoid it.

That's why I attached the diagnostics file to my post. I am at a complete loss as to where to go from here.

    Hi Maureen

In Device Manager what items if any have yellow ! marks by them?

If you installed the audio drivers and you should not have needed all three as they are for different sound devices, then you should have audio, however if some devices as in the chipset HERE is missing then that could cause the audio driver not to install properly.

You have SP3 (Service Pack) for XP so you don't need the Windows UAA HD audio driver which SP2 users need.

SO check Device Manager out and let us know what devices have yellow ! marks but I will imagine you need to install the Chipset and reboot then re-install the Analogue Devices AC97 Audio driver only HERE

    Hi Maureen,
First off is there any yellow ! marks in your Device Manager especially under the Sound/Video and Game Controllers ?? or if there are any yellow ! marks any where in the device manager ??.
Can you please see if Windows Audio is started and set to automatic in Services..... Start> Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services..... scroll down to the windows audio and make sure that it set to auto.

Didn't see you there again David :).

I am the forum ninja and have sneaky slippers, but on topic I think your suggestion of checking the Services and Windows Audio and its Dependencies Services is a great one, also another is to check in the Control Panel Audio panel that the correct sound card is picked in the playback dropdown list.

Just searched your tag # and it came up with only 1 audio driver which is....

    http://support.euro.dell.com/suppor...&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=70114

please try this as it is the one that is listed for your machine... the tag # is unique to your machine as different installers use different hardware/drivers, not all drivers will work for your machine, that is why you have this service tag..... yours is # 7MV7W0J .

Thank you all for the effort and the replies. As I had already done everything and had NO YELLOW exclamation marks anywhere it had become the mystery of the century to me.

However, and I am red faced as I write this, the problem was a very simple one in the end. I had the jack plugged into the sound 'line in' instead of 'line out' connection on the computer. Two months of trying to figure it out. Quite a lot of costs with getting softwares etc so BEWARE!

I did get a really good software which cost £25 to register but can be downloaded and used to scan for out of date drivers for free. It's a great utility so here's a link for info and download link.

    Anyway thanks to everybody )

    Hi Maureen,
Thanks for the feedback and I am pleased that you managed to resolve your issue by yourself, it is usually the simplest of things that can be checked first, but its nothing to be embarrassed about cos even the most learned computer geeks over look things like that and troubleshoot the hardest first :-D.
As for the driver finding software that you have paid for, I would be very carefull in its use as they can render a machine useless with the wrong drivers, with you having a Dell machine I would advise only to use the drivers from their support site for your machine the TAG for your machine is........
...... 7MV7W0J ... this number when put into the Dell site will give all the correct upto date driver versions which are 'UNIQUE FOR YOUR MACHINE. It is not advisable to use third-party drivers for OEM built machines.
Any more issues dont hessitate in making a new thread and some one will assist in trying to resolve it with you.
Thanks for asking for help here from MG's.

    Hi Maureen

Cheers for the update and well it happens to the best of us in plugging things into the wrong port!

But on driver updater's I would not advocate them at all as they are not accurate at all, as too many variables in hardware specs to have all drivers listed correctly, I have seen too many issues, especially with audio drivers due to driver finder apps to count, the only course of action is the original makers site and if a newer driver is not listed then you don't need it, updating drivers when your PC is working ok (or when installed with original drivers in a new install of the OS) is not advisable.

Don't fix what's not broken is a buzzword.

But again thanks for the update.

I found that software a particularly good one. Below is copy of some info from the site on how it works. It did what it said. It went to the Dell site for example and pinpointed the exact drivers for my computer model. I had the choice of doing nothing, getting the driver myself, or by registering letting the software do it. Also does driver back up for re-installation in case of future problems with corrupt driver files etc

I would be really interested to hear any views and find out what any eventual problems might be now that I have a registered copy. Whether I can feel secure using it for example. To me it appears to be a time saving utility and I would appreciate knowing if I am wrong so I can be prepared the next time anything goes wrong.

    Maureen :)

    Hi

I have to say why pay for something that you can get free from going to Dell support and your model PC, driver backup doeskin always work in a new install.

Once you have downloaded the driver for your model PC and say saved then to CD/DVD then you are set and ok, no need for a paid for application, but if you like it then that's your choice, personally I hate driver finder apps with a passion, but that s born out of years of driver support.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, MaureenMc.

I'll throw in my $.02 (which is quickly becoming my standard driver mantra):

Driver updates are usually written to address specific problems with specific programs. In the case of video drivers, these updates are usually game related. So, if a "driver update" software were to find an update for your particular hardware, the update may not necessarily apply to your situation, especially if you are not involved in the processes that the update may be addressing.

To reiterate the aforementioned buzzword: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Seems to me that these "driver update" programs violate that basic principle.

Ok thanks everybody! I get it! I bought it in desperation and then found it seemed to be good at what it did. I have it now so nothing to be done and it didn't do any harm which is a plus I guess.

I have enjoyed the discussions and helpful advice

    Have a nice weekend:cool

    Hi Maureen

Guess all has been exhausted in respect to driver apps pros or cons, so .....
