Hello, I have Windows XP. I was changing a few things on my computer when this bar showed up on the left side. It says Folder Tasks, Other Places and Details. I can not take it off of my desktop. Any ideas?

    Thank you, Nan

That is the standard sidebar for Windows Explorer (another name for My Computer) when in Common Tasks view. If it is on your desktop there has been a system error. I would suggest you try a System Restore to a date which predates this happening.

You can find system restore on Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.

I tried System Restore. It could not restore. Didn't say why. I even went back to last month. Any other ideas, please.

DomLuc , Thank you for your help. I fixed my problem. About three years ago I had the same problem. I found my notes. ;)

Remove Common Tasks from Desktop. XP-CommonTasks.exe
This application will correct the Registry setting that causes the Common Task pane to appear on the Windows XP desktop. I downloaded a zip file

    Thank again, Nan
