:cryI am having the same problem I have windows xp pro and my desktop and web bar are gone also cannot open any programs from task manager I keep getting a windows validation notice that says my windows is counterfeit sometime the active desktop will pop on but the minute i try to click on something everything disapears again I have even tried to get into control panel by way of task manager and no dice I can play games through it and some times get on line. so is this a microsoft issue of locking me out of my computer or is it virus? I can't format or make the computer boot from the cd rom by changing the bios it goes straight into windows.

    HI

Moved your post to its own thread.

Is your Windows acutally counterfeit or do you have legitimate licence for it? Try the Validate Windows option on this page http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/default.aspx?displaylang=en

Is your Windows CD one that looks like this http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/windows/ choose type of CD as in Retail or Purchased with PC and then your Windows version as in XP.

If fail then you either have an illegal version of Windows or outside possablity of malware infection, to rule out malware you will need to run this READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide and then start a new thread in malware with brief outline of your issue or link to this thread. (NOTE that as malware is a widespread thing many forums who specialise in removals are busy so make sure you ran the guide right and please be patient)

    Thanks Halo for moving it,
I am not sure if the license is legit or not since I can not find it or the disc but the disc looked like a legitimate microsoft disc I got it from the person that gave me the pc and unfortunately they have moved out of state and I don't know how to contact them, but my main problem is I cannot do anything as far as downloading or running any type of software on this computer it won' let me I would wipe the hard drive clean and start all over with win98 if I could but I have tried and tried to it will not let me do anything except surf the web from time to time by using new task in task manager I have even tried to wipe the drive by going into administrative services and it grays out the delete partition feature it says I am not the administartor I know that I set myself and my neice as administrators this is just weird can Micrososft actually lock you out of your computer for having counterfeit operating system on it? :cry

If you don't have the XP disk
exactly what CD are you attempting to boot from?

You should be able to boot from CD if your CDROM drive is working. Do you mean you can't get into BIOS?

I can get into the bios and change them but it still won't boot from the CDROM I know it works because I played a CD in it.

When you are going into BIOS and changing your Boot Order to "CD First" are you saving changes? There should be prompts to tell you how to "save changes".

If you open the PC case and remove the power cord from the hard drive and try to boot with the Installation CD in your CDROM--what happens?

Yes I am Saving the changes. I have not tried that since I have arthritis and it's hard for me to relly handle right now but I will have my brother come and open it up for me.

    1. I do not believe that the 98CD is bootable. I haven't used 98 in years but I needed a boot floppy then I had to point it to the CD before I could install 98.
    2. Depending on the model of computer and the XP CD you are using, it might not work. Some computers have a recovery partition and expect to recover from that. Some XP CDs are tied to a certain brand of computer and can not be run on different brand.

well I just want to say thanks to all of you for your excellent advice and I talked to a member of micrososfts anti=piracy team and she told me that since I threw the disk away :-o because I got p.o.ed after finding out it was not a legit copy that i should try to get online with that pc and go to microsofts site and run the test and then purchas a kit and they will guide me through getting the pc back upso thanks all I am always asking questions when it comes to a computer and I have learned a lot from this site.:)
