What are the benefits of using things like KDE on top of Ubuntu? I had KDE before the update to 8.04 and am thinking about going without for a while. I also found something called XFCE, anything different? Thanks.

Personally, I like KDE, because it is closer to windows in appearance/looks... it comes with a filesystem explorer/web browser, Konqueror (the equivalent to Microsoft's Windows Explorer/Internet Explorer) that I prefer to use over Gnome's for example.

    There's also more eye-candy.

XFCE isn't one I've used on a live system, but from what I can tell from reading is a more lightweight desktop manager. I've SEEN it in a live CD environment, and it was very minimal. That SHOULD mean it would work a little more quickly. Might be a harder learning curve from the look of it.

I'm a Gnome convert after using KDE for the last two years.

Personally, I find KDE too busy/bloated for my tastes. I played with 4.0 a little. Looked nice, but the usability factor just wasn't there for me.

Think of XFCE as a lightweight/minimalist version of Gnome.

uses the XFCE desktop. I had it installed on an older computer (as in slower and not too much RAM) and I liked it a lot. I installed the SOHO version which included a fair number of apps. I don't recall if I have tried any live CDs that use XCFE.

For another smaller desktop footprint, there is also IceWm. Puppy linux uses that and my eeepc running Xandros uses it in the Easy Mode. When you switch to Advanced Mode, the desktop manager changes to KDE.

I think that Vector Linux looks really cool. I think I'll try it out.. Can I get it from the Terminal?

I agree and when 4.0 came out, I installed Kubuntu fresh.

I then spent about 4 hours uninstalling KDE and reinstalling Gnome. EXCEPT Amarok and K3B. Oh, and Konqueror for FTP/SSH drive access.

Personal preferences, but KDE is also not as easy to customize as Gnome and I found it annoying to have Gnome reinstalling something when I did updates....

Downloading and installation instructions for any version are located in the manuals section.
