I use Windows XP Pro, dual core cpu, 4GB RAM. and 40GB hard disc partition
for O.S. Page file 4GB. When I try to use Search utility for locating files, I find
that if I stop search in the middle the desktop freezes. Task Manager also
freezes after it comes up if I invoke it. The only way out is reset the system.
Also if I allow the search to complete, I get the results I want but again when
I close Search the desktop freezes more often than not.
How do I get over this problem? What causes it?

I've found XP's searching to be worthless.
Install another search engine and see if the problem persists.
This is what I use and am extremely pleased with it
