    heres my problem...

every time i try to open a folder the desktop, task bar & start menu freezes up. the folder never opens but any programs i have open still work fine as long as i dont minimize or need to save and i can access the task manager thru ctrl/alt/del ...

ive followed the "before post" rules to no avail.

    Os is windowsXP

ive run my anti-virus, spy-bot, regcure, lavasoft's ad-aware, hijack this, windows disk cleanup & defrag. ive even tried updating my os.

thank you in advance for any help or advice you may offer

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
Try running Dial-A-Fix. Since you have problems with opening folders, you may have trouble using it because the download is a .zip file. I don't know if you can unzip files without the desktop freezing. Try it. If you can't unzip it, let me know, and I'll send an unzipped version to you in an email attachment. DO NOT post your email here. Send me a private message with your email address and we'll go from there. Here's the Dial-A-Fix download link:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4899.html (check everything in the 'Registration Center' and click 'Go')
Lots of helpful info can be found at the Dial-A-Fix wiki, here http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix
Another things you can try is the system file checker: put your XP disc in the CD drive and click 'Exit' when the big blue window opens. Click Start > Run and type cmd and press Enter. In the window that opens, type sfc /purgecache and press Enter. This should take less than minute to complete, but I've seen it take up to 3 or 4 minutes. When that's done, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. This step can take much longer to finish. If you get a prompt that says something like "insert your Windows disc in the CD drive" just click 'retry'. If this comes up many, many times and you have a 2nd CD drive, move the Windows disc to the 2nd drive and click 'Retry'. Just let it run. Hopefully it will help. You can also try a repair install of Windows (we'll get into that later if needed). Have you tried a system restore to a few days ago? Or to a date when you know the problem wasn't there?
Let us know how it goes, and good luck!

(oh yeah- in the sfc commands above, there's a space between the "sfc" and the "/" slash. If you don't put the space in, the commands will error out)

    downloaded the dial-a-fix...

dial-a-fix gets to the SLL/HTTPS/Crypt - register DLLs - part of the program and freezes up (not responding). ive run it several times with the same results... any suggestions???

and yes, ive tried system restore

Hmmm... sounds like a problem with system DLL files. If Dial-a-fix is locking up, then try the other recommendation I mentioned above and run the system file checker.

if you can go to the task manager did you check the processes on there.see if your memory usage is high also your cpu usage.

well the reason for that sometimes your memory causes computer to freeze up. what is all your start-ups programs sometimes one of these programs can cause it to do that too.need more details to pinpoint the prolbems.

lmao @ you... i like my ccleaner @ start up... but i bow to your wisdom and ive done as you said...

the other stuff i agree with 100% except for quickcam... dont ask me why but the dam thing wont work if its not allowed to run at startup.. i fought with it for weeks and then gave in. that maybe another issue i may address some other time
