Not quite sure if this correct thread for posting my problem but hopefully if not someone can point me to correct location.

Problem is as follows:- Desktop Icons are taking an age to activate after signing on to PC. No idea what could be the problem. Unable to pinpoint exactly when this problem started.
Perhaps someone could suggest a possible reason for this unusual behaviour and how to possibly rectify

    Thanks

Probably something in your Start Up is slowing things down. Norton and McAfee are famous for this. Click Start > Run and type msconfig and press Enter. Go to the startup tab and start unchecking stuff, esp. Norton/McAfee items. You can even uncheck 'em all if you want, then recheck 'em one by one as you pinpoint the problem.... you'll need to reboot for the changes to take effect.

    Hi ALL

Had a go at suggestions but result the same. By coincedence I got diverted once and did not sign on using password. After about five minutes when I came back and eventually signed in - lo and behold it was as though my PC had gone through a complete overhaul. Taskbar/Systray/Desktop Icons immediately appeared.
Upon discovering this, I immediately closed down and restarted. Entered my password and the situation reverted to what was transpiring earlier. I.E. Icons etc not appearing for about 3-4 mins.
Switched off once again and delayed signing on. Once again after the delay what was stated in para remarkably transpired.
Having said that I have no idea why this should be happening so perhaps someone might be able to evaluate what might be taking place.

    Thanks
    Guru

    Several things to do, Guru

    First
If you make a new account does it experience the same problem?

    Second
Get you XP Cd handy and run the sytem file checker
    start>run>typein
    cmd
at the the > prompt in the black window that opens typein
    sfc /purgecache

    Third
Use system restore to return to a time when it was working.

    Fourth
Start the pc to the boot options screen
repeatedly tap F8 after bios whilst windows starts.
Choose enable bootlogging and normal boot
When the sytem has booted examine
    NTBTLOG.TXT
Look at the end to see if you can spot the problem. Post the file if you like.

    Fifth
In event viewer examine the logs
    start>control panel>performandmaintenance>administrative tools>eventviewer.

    Hi Guys

Should have responded earlier but circumstances prevented me from so doing.
The problem has been solved as far as I am concerned because since carrying the following all has been working normally.

Right click open area on Desktop - Click arrange icons - untick Lock web items on desktop if ticked.
    Restart PC
    Have had no problems since

If henri = guru then all is well.

Is this a theme for a new Dan Brown novel?

Anyway thanks for letting us know the resolution it is most interesting and often the simple which eludes us.
