desktop icons

Hi all, I have windows vista on my pc, recently the desktop icons are playing up, if i single click an icon it highlights the icon, which is normal, to unhighlight the icon i just click anywhere on the screen, that's what's not happening at the moment, the icon just stays highlighted, the only way i can get the icons working normally is to hit cntrl, alt ,delete, open task manager, that shows nothing running and when i close task manager icons work fine. By googling my problem, only suggestions i have found are video card driver not up to date, i am using nvidia geforce 9500gt graphic card and installed current drivers from nvidia site 2 days ago but that didn't fix the problem.

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

just a shot in the dark...but could your control key or shift key be stuck? that's the only way i could get it to do the same thing.

 

control and shift keys don't seem to be stuck, after your response i tried a different keyboard and it was doing the same thing, cheers.
