Desktop Internet Option Delay

    Running a Dell 8200 with IE and Firefox. XP SP2 with all updates.

    Noticed a significant delay if I click on a desktop icon that connects to the net.
    Other icons on desktop or in quick launch are normal.

    Cleaned and deloused the machine, but it didn't help.

    Then noticed that if either browser was open, the delay was gone.
    What causes this?

    Any advice would be appreciated!
